The Crow Girl’s season two finale probably left you feeling heavily unsettled. The drama’s painful and evocative conclusion sets your teeth on edge from injustices that can never be excused, and yet its refusal to steer the story towards a happy ending is also what makes it so brilliant.<\/p>\n

It hasn’t been confirmed yet whether or not season two will be the last for the popular show, but either way, there is an air of finality to things as psychologist Sophia Craven (Katherine Kelly) learns that she is an alternate personality of Victoria Burkeman (Clara Rugaard) who has Dissociative Identity Disorder. <\/p>\n

In turn, she also learns that she has been the one hunting down and murdering the upper echelon who were complicit in her (and others’) abuse as a child, including Piers Stirling (played by Richard Linton). <\/p>\n

The Crow Girl ends with Sophia, now Victoria, defying Jeannette’s wishes to hand Piers over to the police, and killing him instead. <\/p>\n

While there is a vigilante kind of satisfaction in Sophia finally getting the justice she has craved after a childhood riddled with neglect, sexual abuse and the abduction – and ultimate murder of her child – The Crow Girl’s ending is marred by sadness. <\/p>\n

Sophia, the character who was compassionate and who brought the viewers so much intrigue, has now been lost to Victoria, whose comfort gained from attaining revenge is fleeting. <\/p>\n

By the end her hurt is so loud, her pain unresolved, and there is no sign of any healing in sight when she flees the murder scene upon Jeannette’s request. <\/p>\n

Speaking of which, DCI Jeanette Kilburn’s relationship with Sophia complicated her career long before she let her go. However that is a drop in the ocean given that the complexity of their situation means that she is also grieving the loss of the woman she fell in love with. <\/p>\n

It was Sophia, not Victoria, with whom she connected, and the realisation surrounding her identity leaves no room for their relationship to flourish. <\/p>\n

The finale sees Jeanette struggling to come to terms with this new reality, and we’d wager the emotional pain of it far outweighs the physical agony of the gunshot wound she sustained during the apprehension of Piers. <\/p>\n

As such, it isn’t the kind of ending that leaves you with that warm, fuzzy feeling of a murder mystery being all wrapped up. Instead it ties you in knots with its uneasiness \u2013 and that feels entirely appropriate. <\/p>\n

The extremities of not just Victoria’s abuse, but that of the other victims who were just children when they were repeatedly assaulted, make it difficult for a happy ending to feel authentic. Because how could it be? We see the impact it left Victoria with, but there is no accounting for how deeply affected the other victims have been.<\/p>\n

“I think the ending just highlights the series, which is a very complicated, untidy, guttural, visceral drama,” said Myles, speaking exclusively to Digital Spy about its dark themes. “[It] will never, ever have a nice little bow. Will never ever please everybody, but it will be truthful to itself.” <\/p>\n

Kelly also shared: “It must feel like it feels [for a detective when they] solve a case. There’s no clean break. There’s no euphoria. There are no ends tied up. Yes, it’s solved. Yes, there is an ending but I can’t imagine it ever gives you any sort of wave of relief because so much has happened for that to be the end.”<\/p>\n

Kelly went on to praise the bleak ending. <\/p>\n

“I felt like it was a very brave decision to not try and sew everything up and make it feel more satisfying and more of a happy ending,” said the actor. “I thought that was a really bold move, that actually this is the end. It doesn’t lift anything from you.”<\/p>\n

Perfect closure may have been substituted for messy and vengeful justice, but The Crow Girl season two’s finale isn’t devoid of hope and beauty. <\/p>\n

There is compassion and understanding shared between Eve and Katherine’s characters, who found something real in the midst of this bleakness. Whose companionship offered both a lifeline, in different ways, even if temporary. <\/p>\n

In the ruins, the pair must now begin again. Jeanette with her son and husband (however that relationship shapes up), and Victoria with, if not a clean slate, a cleaner one from which to rebuild her life. And that feels more appropriate than a forced happy ending.<\/p>\n
