NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 Stephen Colbert,<\/a> whose 11-year run as host of \u201cThe Late Show\u201d was defined in part by his feud with President Donald Trump<\/a>, has received an \u201canti-censorship\u201d award from a foundation established by the author-playwright-publisher Ishmael Reed.<\/a><\/p>\n

Colbert was among the recipients of the 47th annual American Book Awards. They were announced Wednesday by the Before Columbus Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Oakland, California, that champions diversity in U.S. literature and culture. <\/p>\n

CBS ended Colbert\u2019s program in May, removing a high-profile platform for one of Trump\u2019s most prominent critics<\/a>. The network cited economic reasons for its decision. Colbert and others have questioned that explanation. <\/p>\n

The foundation also honored a wide range of literary releases, from Nicholas Boggs\u2019 \u201cBaldwin,\u201d a biography of James Baldwin; to John Fugelsang\u2019s religious critique \u201cSeparation of Church and Hate\u201d to the poetry collection \u201cVariations in Blue,\u201d by Adela Najarro. Novelist-playwright Karen Tei Yamashita received a lifetime achievement prize.<\/p>\n

Colbert shares his anti-censorship prize with one of the country\u2019s top independent booksellers, Mitchell Kaplan, founder of Books & Books in Coral Gables, Florida. Longtime Grove\/Atlantic publisher Morgan Entrekin, as well as Roger Malina, executive editor of the academic journal Leonardo, received editor\/publisher awards.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe American Book Awards were created to provide recognition for outstanding literary achievement from the entire spectrum of America\u2019s diverse literary community,\u201d the foundation\u2019s announcement reads in part. \u201cThe award winners range from well-known and established writers to under-recognized authors and first works.
