“I was really just trying to hold back tears, and it was a special moment to have all of my closest there, right in the stands, to watch the moment as well.

“I just never thought that I’d get a moment to hear, standing on a dais, our national anthem, and to have a gold medal around my neck in a moment like this. So yeah, really special,” she said.

Hobbs said there has been “a lot of tears over the last 24 hours”.

“I think once the tears go, then it will have fully sunk in. I think it’s going to go through waves.

“To be honest, it’s a pretty surreal thing to have done, and yeah, just need to probably get home, and there’ll be another wave of emotion…. It’s a really really cool moment.”

Yesterday, Hobbs said “a lot can go right and a lot can go wrong in the 100 metres”.

“There’s very little room for error. I had to execute right from the start and not tense up. That’s something that I’ve historically done, and so this season we had a good consistent run of races coming into this and so I just leaned on the fact that I had it in my legs coming in.”

Englishwoman Amy Hunt (10.98s) took silver, and Australian Torrie Lewis (10.99s) took bronze.
