\n\tEven though Queenstown\u2019s reputation as New Zealand<\/a>\u2019s adventure<\/a> capital precedes it, I still wasn\u2019t quite prepared for how committed to the bit everyone is. Wherever you look, someone seems to be dabbling in a gravity- or near-death-defying activity. Hurtling off a suspension bridge on a swing before breakfast? Check. Voluntarily luging down a mountain at impossibly high speeds before lunch? Even 7-year-olds do it.<\/p>\n

\n\tThis South Island mountain town is the birthplace of bungee jumping and extreme jet boating, whose signature 360-spins are what I imagine the inside of a washing machine feels like. While there\u2019s no shortage of opportunities to leap, launch, luge, and lunge around Queenstown, adventure-lite travelers like me\u2014whose elevated heart rate comes from completing a ten-course tasting menu\u2014had to look harder for their thrills. Look no more: In the last two years, Queenstown has gotten a glow-up, expanding its hospitality beyond home rentals and Fergburger (though who doesn\u2019t love Fergburger<\/a>?!) to include truly five-star hotels, Michelin-starred restaurants, and new wellness experiences. <\/p>\n

\n\tMy low-fi, high-thread-count Queenstown sojourn started in earnest aboard the\u00a0Watershed<\/a>, a Finnish-style, wood-fired floating sauna moored on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, just a five-minute walk from downtown.\u00a0The first floating sauna of its kind to open in the country, this third space, as the owner Dominic Bowden tells me, has been a big draw for locals and visitors seeking a blissed-out alternative to the region\u2019s signature adrenaline rush. I must have been truly blissed out because somewhere between the sauna and being entranced by the early morning sun, which cast its signature warm glow across the Remarkables mountain range, I slipped into a hypnotic state and voluntarily jumped into the glacial lake water below\u2014and dare I say, enjoyed it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tLuckily, I didn\u2019t have to travel far to get my head right. Just across the street overlooking Lake Wakatipu,\u00a0ROKI Collection<\/a>\u00a0opened in September and sits at the tippy top of Queenstown\u2019s luxury hotel scene, so much so that it even earned a spot on\u00a0Robb Report\u2019s new\u00a050 Greatest Luxury Hotels on Earth<\/a> list. Named for the M\u0101ori word for tranquility, the ethos of this sumptuously designed 15-suite urban chalet leans heavily into high-touch, ultra-luxe restoration, starting with the personalized rituals (not to be confused with or even referred to as massages) at\u00a0ROKI Pure<\/a>. Inside this sanctuary of wellbeing, restorative treatments and personalized reset programs border on a religious revival. The latest offering, a rewilding experience that whisks guests via private helicopter to a secret remote location for a one-of-a-kind massage\u2014err, ritual\u2014is enough to make you a ROKI acolyte in no time.<\/p>\n

\n\tAt happy hour, fresh Marlborough oysters, caviar bumps delivered tableside via trolley cart, and crisp glasses of Central Otago chardonnay flow freely inside the Library Bar. You\u2019ll want to pace yourself on the apps, though. Just off the lobby, executive chef Paul Froggatt<\/a>, formerly of New Zealand icon Huka Lodge, oversees the ten-course tasting \u201cjourney\u201d at the country\u2019s newly awarded, two-Michelin-starred\u00a0Essence<\/a>. Sommelier Erick Tuesta\u2019s adventurous wine pairings are as much a part of the journey as the food itself. Rather than reaching for the obvious Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, Tuesta favors lesser-known Central Otago wines\u2014and even locally brewed sake\u2014turning each pairing into its own surprise.\u00a0A love letter to New Zealand\u2019s larder, Froggatt\u2019s menu celebrates seafood and hyper-local produce, from freshly caught langoustine crowned with caviar and floating in a fragrant bath of lemongrass to local lamb served over sea lettuce and peppered with allium flowers. Every course feels thoughtful, precise, and distinctly Queenstown: fun, elevated, and delightful. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tROKI might be the most premium offering in Queenstown right now, but it\u2019s far from the only game in town. Less than a 12-minute drive along the scenic Gorge Road en route to Arthurs Point,\u00a0Coronet Ridge Resort\u00a0<\/a>opened in January following a multimillion-dollar transformation. Today, the 41-suite luxury retreat overlooks the Shotover River, where jet boats can be seen carving through the canyon below from the privacy of your balcony. Beyond the expansive suites, which come fully stocked with locally sourced snacks and Whitaker chocolate, the resort leans heavily into elevated apr\u00e8s-adventure.<\/p>\n

\n\tCoronet Ridge has its own private cinema and a Roman-inspired spa with steam rooms and a heated indoor pool, though the highlight is certainly a late-night soak in the private outdoor hot tubs, which can be reserved for a front-row seat to stargazing and, with any luck, a glimpse of the Aurora Australis.\u00a0The real star of the show here is\u00a0Elevation Bar & Restaurant<\/a>, where executive chef Dominic Dsouza\u2014whose r\u00e9sum\u00e9 includes Bangkok\u2019s Gaggan and Copenhagen\u2019s Geranium\u2014puts a refined spin on New Zealand\u2019s bounty. Think high-country venison (or salmon depending on the season) topped with blueberry jus and rhubarb confit, velvety wild mushroom p\u00e2t\u00e9, and impeccably plated dishes that blend French technique with subtle Asian influences. Grab a table on the terrace overlooking the river at sunset.<\/p>\n

\n\tLater this year,\u00a0a collection of 20 luxury villas and a larger four-suite residence is slated to open at\u00a0Waimarino Lodge<\/a>\u00a0along the shores of Lake Wakatipu, followed by the hotly anticipated\u00a0NOCTIS by Kamana<\/a>\u00a0in 2027.\u00a0Queenstown may have built its reputation as the world\u2019s adrenaline capital, but its over-the-top wellness experiences, five-star hotel scene, and destination-worthy restaurants are arguably just as thrilling as the bungee jumps and jet boats that put it on the map.<\/p>\n
