In late 2025, researchers noticed a bright flare in the constellation Cetus. <\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"3\">After some study, that bright flare turned out to reveal a supermassive black hole, and the flare itself was caused by the black hole shredding a nearby star, known scientifically as a tidal disruption event. <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/missions\/swift\/nasas-swift-sees-wandering-mega-black-hole-shredding-star\/#:~:text=The%20black%20hole%20behind%20the%20blast%20weighs%20in%20at%20about%20a%20million%20times%20the%20Sun%E2%80%99s%20mass.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">According to NASA<\/a>, the black hole weighs in at about a million times the mass of our Sun. <\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"4\">The researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.3847\/2041-8213\/ae77f3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">published their findings<\/a> on Monday in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/6a79a352-9946-495e-8535-a9135b7189ce.gif\" alt=\"Image no longer available\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" draggable=\"true\" class=\"css-fphibt\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This GIF shows the galaxy WISEA J014656.04-152214.7, located about 750 million light-years away in the constellation Cetus, before and after a tidal disruption event was spotted on its outer edge in November 2025. The black + symbol marks the host galaxy and the blue circle marks the approximate area of the wandering supermassive black hole. The blue dot that appears within the circle is not a new star, but the nearby star\u2019s energy being absorbed by the black hole.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/6a79a352-9946-495e-8535-a9135b7189ce.gif\" alt=\"Image no longer available\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"css-hr9vxw\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"7\">&#8220;We were looking for these star-shredding events as a way to find otherwise invisible supermassive black holes wandering away from the galactic cores where they usually reside,&#8221; Robert Stein, the lead researcher on the paper, <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/missions\/swift\/nasas-swift-sees-wandering-mega-black-hole-shredding-star\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told NASA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"8\">The blue dot that is visible in the GIF above is the black hole&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/universe\/black-holes\/anatomy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">accretion disk<\/a>, or the area where the diffuse material from the star collects as it circles the drain of the black hole&#8217;s singularity.<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"9\">The flare was originally seen by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ztf.caltech.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Zwicky Transient Facility<\/a> (ZTF), a survey conducted by the Palomar Observatory in Southern California that scans the night sky every two days. The flare was corroborated by several other telescopes and finally confirmed as a shredding black hole by Swift&#8217;s instruments.<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"10\">Stein explained that since 2024, his team has been utilizing a new artificial intelligence tool, called <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.3847\/2041-8213\/ad3337\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">tdescore<\/a>, to identify cosmic anomalies as they scan the sky in depth every other night.<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"11\">&#8220;Out of the half million flashes ZTF detects each night, our new artificial intelligence algorithm automatically recognized a flare that looked a lot like a tidal disruption event, despite its unusual location in the outskirts of a galaxy,&#8221; Stein said. <\/p>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/94cd0034-94ba-4a02-bda8-58834aebfdfa.jpg\" alt=\"Image no longer available\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" draggable=\"true\" class=\"css-fphibt\"\/><\/p>\n<p>An artist\u2019s concept of a tidal disruption event (TDE) that happens when a star passes fatally close to a supermassive black hole, which reacts by launching a relativistic jet.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/94cd0034-94ba-4a02-bda8-58834aebfdfa.jpg\" alt=\"Image no longer available\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"css-hr9vxw\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"13\">TDEs were <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=109350X1567044&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2F254295a0&amp;sref=&amp;xcust=nFRE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">first predicted in the 1970s<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/mnras\/article\/520\/3\/3549\/6979817\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">first recorded in the &#8217;90s<\/a>.
