A Brisbane dog clearly has a sweet tooth after eating around 1.1kg of jelly snakes.

Scooter, a three-year-old beagle, and her sister Jada were taken to Animal Emergency Service Jindalee at around 8pm on Monday after their owners came across the “suspiciously empty” bag of sweets.

After arriving at the vets, Scooter was presumed to be the main culprit after her weight was checked and she came in heavier than usual.

However, the vets were unsure if Jada had also dug into the sweets.

A medical exam of both dogs took place by Dr Cordelia Edwards, who then gave Scooter and Jada medication to make them vomit.

Veterinary nurse manager Kate Wesche said the primary concern for the pair was the amount of sugars and artificial sweeteners, particularly xylitol, which could be in the sweets.

“Xylitol can be very toxic to dogs, causing seizures and affecting the liver,” she told 1News.

“Luckily these were The Natural Confectionery Company Snakes which don’t contain xylitol, but the amount of natural sugar they would have consumed can still cause severe gastrointestinal upset,” she said.

After the medication was given, it was clear Scooter was the culprit after she brought up “almost the whole 1.1kg of jelly snakes”.

Wesche said Scooter had “clearly no regrets in her decision”.

“Poor sister Jada had only eaten a single jelly snake.”

After a short stay to make sure they were well, both Scooter and Jada were given clean bills of health and were able to go home.

“All reports are that they are going well at home.”

Wesche said beagles are “common culprits for eating things they shouldn’t”.

“But 1.1kg of jelly snakes is definitely a first.”

Animal Emergency Service Jindalee said this story serves as a reminder for pet owners that seemingly harmless treats can pose significant risks to pets, and prompt veterinary attention is always recommended if an ingestion occurs.
