It’s a full set of medals for New Zealand on the first day of track cycling at the Commonwealth Games with a gold, a silver and two bronze medals.

Paracyclist Emma Foy and pilot Jessie Hodges won gold in the women’s tandem B sprint final.

Australia won the first race in the best of three final, but a collision between the two in the second race delayed the event.

Foy and Hodges then picked themselves up to win race two and dominated race three in a performance Foy was proud of.

“It was what we were planning to do before the crash and we practised these sort of things at training and we were able to pull it off,” Foy said.

Hodges said the crash didn’t affect them too much.

“We were definitely sore but we were just saying after the gold it doesn’t hurt so much now.

“It makes all the training and the blood, sweat and tears all worth it.”

Foy is a former world champion on both the road and the track.

The women’s pursuit team couldn’t compete with Australia in the 4000m final with the defending champions recording a games record time, with New Zealand finishing two seconds behind them.

“We wanted to get the gold for sure but I think we can be super proud of the silver. We strive to do the best we can and I think we did that out there today,” said team member Bryony Botha.

Nicole Murray rode a world record time to grab the bronze medal in the women’s C4-C5 4000m individual pursuit. The time was later eclipsed by Australian Tara Neyland in the gold medal ride.

The men’s pursuit team beat Wales in the bronze medal ride, while Australia beat England for gold.

There was disappointment for New Zealand in the women’s team sprint with Ellesse Andrews, Olivia King and Rebecca Petch only managing the fifth fastest time and missing out on the medal rides.

Andrews and Petch were members of the Olympic silver medal team in 2024.

[3
42,43,40,38,41,39
post-553552","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-headlines","tag-headlines","tag-news","tag-top-news","tag-top-stories","tag-topnews","tag-topstories
["GET
