A 5.9 tremor struck 5km south of Taumarunu<\/a>i at 4.51am last Saturday, and two weeks ago Southlanders were jolted by a late evening quake<\/a> \u2013 also measuring 5.9 \u2013 40km north of Te Anau.<\/p>\n

Raumati woman Jenny Smith described last night\u2019s quake as \u201ca couple of real jolts\u201d.<\/p>\n

Others flocked to social media to share their experiences.<\/p>\n

A Waikanae Beach resident wrote on Facebook that the quake delivered a \u201csharp jolt and rumble\u201d.<\/p>\n

Another person initially blamed their cat.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just hopped into bed. And then I felt shaking\u201a the cat was on the bed. I thought he was itching and shaking the bed.”<\/p>\n

Many described hearing the quake before feeling it, with a K\u0101piti man noting the \u201cphone alert went off same time as I heard [the earthquake].\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cStarted with an audible bang before the shaking started,\u201d one woman wrote on Facebook.<\/p>\n

\u201cHeard that one coming,\u201d wrote another on X.<\/p>\n

A Paraparaumu resident felt a \u201csharp jolt … and an alarm went off on my phone!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWobble, wobble,\u201d chipped in another.<\/p>\n

A third opted for a stronger choice of words.<\/p>\n

\u201cF******g hell that one went boom!\u201d<\/p>\n

Further north, a Whanganui resident described hearing a rumble before feeling \u201cthe swaying\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust a small one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Others further away from the epicentre also reported minor effects, with a person in Blenheim writing on Facebook that they felt it, but \u201conly just\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cGentle sway felt in Riwaka, Motueka\u201d, wrote another.<\/p>\n

And despite being close to the epicentre, the end-of-week slumber proved too deep for some.<\/p>\n

\u201cMissed it- Porirua\u201d, one wrote.<\/p>\n

Civil Defence reminded Kiwis earthquakes <\/a>were a \u201cgood reminder to stay prepared\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnother shake tonight \u2014 this one located near Wellington and widely felt across parts of the motu”, it wrote on Facebook.<\/p>\n

\u201cDrop, Cover, and Hold remains the right action to take during an earthquake. If you\u2019re in bed, remember to Stay, Cover, and Hold.<\/p>\n
