Payne controlled the opening stanza of the race, only for traffic to baulk the Grove Racing driver and allow Feeney to close the gap rapidly and execute a pass for top spot.<\/p>\n
Payne tried his best, but couldn\u2019t return serve as he battled understeer in the wake of the Triple Eight driver.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s the first win for Feeney since Symmons Plains, ending a seven-race drought.<\/p>\n
It also ended Triple Eight\u2019s podiumless run of races, which extended to seven after the Wanneroo Raceway opener.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s probably just more of a belief to be honest,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve been searching a bit, the last couple of rounds have been really tough and it\u2019s certainly not been due to a lack of effort.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis team has been putting in so much hard work so this win is for everybody at Triple Eight Race Engineering.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve still got a fair bit of work to do. I was made to look pretty silly in that first stint, Matt disappeared into the distance.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut it came alive in the second stint. I was able to get the move done and was able to drive away.\u201d<\/p>\n
Payne lamented the ill-timed lapped traffic that ultimately cost him time to Feeney.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would have done the same thing if I was in his position,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was a shame. I think we just got caught out with lapped traffic at absolutely the wrong time.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t think there was anything I could have done, if I passed that car up the inside he would have switched me back.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat can you do? Some things don\u2019t go your way, and then just got caught behind him for the rest of that, just understeering too much.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alongside him, Feeney was slow away and immediately went on the defence to cover an attack from Kai Allen.<\/p>\n Feeney survived the first turn in second while Randle was left to fend off Allen.<\/p>\n Randle got all out of shape at Turn 3 and dropped two wheels off the track. The Tickford Mustang just stayed on the track at Turn 4, but lost out to Andre Heimgartner and Chaz Mostert.<\/p>\n Rylan Gray\u2019s career-best qualifying effort unravelled in the opening laps. By Lap 10 he was down nine positions to 19th and looking likely to lose more.<\/p>\n The biggest mover in the opening stanza was Jobe Stewart who climbed four places to 15th while Will Brown made up three places to ninth.<\/p>\n The battle for the wooden spoon nearly ended in tears on Lap 10 when Cooper Murray and Aaron Cameron made wheel-to-wheel contact on the front straight.<\/p>\n The Tickford Mustangs looked like they were beginning to fade. Eighth-placed Waters lost out to Brown while Kostecki got by Randle for sixth.<\/p>\n Wood fired his Walkinshaw Supra down the inside of Waters on Lap 14 and looked like he propped in the corner.<\/p>\n Waters got the better corner exit and returned serve and gave Wood a whack for good measure as he retook the place.<\/p>\n Before the pit stops began, it was Payne who led Feeney, Allen, Heimgartner, Mostert, Kostecki, Brown, Randle, Waters and Wood.<\/p>\n Mostert was the first to blink on Lap 16 from fifth, taking four tyres and the opportunity to get clear air. De Pasquale responded a lap later with his first pit stop.<\/p>\n At the head of the field, Payne led Feeney to the tune of two-and-a-half seconds. Allen was right on Feeney\u2019s rear bumper.<\/p>\n Allen elected to pit on Lap 21. Unsurprisingly, Feeney reacted a lap later.
