{"id":554775,"date":"2026-08-01T14:22:27","date_gmt":"2026-08-01T14:22:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/554775\/"},"modified":"2026-08-01T14:22:27","modified_gmt":"2026-08-01T14:22:27","slug":"how-to-check-if-ird-has-unclaimed-money-with-your-name-on-it-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/554775\/","title":{"rendered":"How to check if IRD has unclaimed money with your name on it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">Did you know you could be one of many kiwis with unclaimed money being held by Inland Revenue?<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">If not it&#8217;s time to pay a visit to the IRD website and find out, with more than $600 million on the most recent unclaimed funds list.<\/p>\n<p>What exactly are unclaimed funds?<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">Unclaimed money is held by IRD when someone can&#8217;t be found, which is what makes it different to a tax refund.<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">It could be that you had an old bank account with some money in it that you hadn&#8217;t used in five years, or you have unpaid wages from over five years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">You may have left something at a hotel, or hostel and after six months of it going unclaimed the business owner sold it and passed the money to IRD.<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">The M\u0101ori Trustee may be holding funds for you &#8211; it holds money in the common fund for at least 10 years and if no claim has been made for that money during that time, it will become unclaimed money.<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">Other reasons might be unclaimed dividends, proceeds of life insurance policies and awards from court cases or prisoners&#8217; allowances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">An Inland Revenue spokesperson said unclaimed money that gets paid to IRD as well as other incoming payments, get automatically collected and transferred to Treasury on a regular basis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">&#8220;As part of their work, the Unclaimed Money team identifies potential owners and sends out letters inviting them to submit claims. Claims are processed by our team throughout the year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>How do I know if I have unclaimed money?<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">There are two ways to do this.<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">You can search for yourself in myIR. Just log in, click on &#8216;I want to&#8230;&#8217; and go to &#8216;Registration, application and enrolment&#8217;. Then select &#8216;Apply for unclaimed money&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">Or you can search the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ird.govt.nz\/unclaimedmoney\/claiming-unclaimed-money\/search-the-database\" class=\"underline-brand-hover visited:text-foreground-secondary hover:visited:text-foreground-primary\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">IRD website<\/a> where the unclaimed money list is publicly available. This is the option to choose if you&#8217;re searching on behalf of someone else, you want to search by a previous name you&#8217;ve gone by, you don&#8217;t have myIR account or you are searching on behalf of an organisation, trust or estate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">While you can see if you have unclaimed funds through this search you can only make a claim through myIR.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4JKMNNG_Screenshot_31_7_2026_12562_myir_ird_govt_nz_jpeg.png\"  alt=\"IRD's publicly available unclaimed money search.\" width=\"614\" height=\"384\" class=\"ml:max-h-[50rem] max-w-full aspect-[16\/10] object-cover\"  decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"auto\"\/><\/p>\n<p>IRD&#8217;s publicly available unclaimed money search.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-foreground-secondary flex-shrink-0 ml-4\">Screenshot\/IRD<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">You&#8217;ll need to provide information to help confirm you&#8217;re the person the money belongs to. This might be past contact information, an old statement or letter from an organisation or person, or a copy of a will.<\/p>\n<p>How long does IRD hold the money for?<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">An Inland Revenue spokesperson unclaimed funds are held for 20 years after it is transferred to the IRD.<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">&#8220;If no valid claim is made within that 20-year period, the money is removed from the unclaimed money list and no further claims can be made.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">Eventually, any unclaimed money is transferred to the Crown.<\/p>\n<p>How long will it take for me to get my money?<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">Generally it takes 10-12 weeks to receive the money but with more people currently searching for unclaimed funds at the moment, IRD may take longer to process a claim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">Attaching as much evidence as possible with your submission helps to avoid even further delays.<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">IRD will let you know if your claim is successful once it&#8217;s processed.<\/p>\n<p>It is legit but watch out for scams<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">It may seem like a lot of people have never heard of IRD&#8217;s unclaimed funds but it is legitimate (if you go through the official IRD website).<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">IRD has previously said people need to watch out for scammers who contact them saying they have unclaimed money waiting for you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">Here are some signs someone is trying to scam you.<\/p>\n<p>How much is unclaimed?<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">As of 30 June 2025 $619,311 million is being held by Inland Revenue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">This is an increase from previous years with $574,547 million unclaimed funds in June of 2024 and $446,758 million in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">IRD said the 30 June 2026 figures are not yet available.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Did you know you could be one of many kiwis with unclaimed money being held by Inland Revenue?&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":481963,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[138,111,139,69],"class_list":["post-554775","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-business","tag-business","tag-new-zealand","tag-newzealand","tag-nz"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/554775","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=554775"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/554775\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/481963"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=554775"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=554775"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=554775"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
