{"id":558457,"date":"2026-08-04T06:18:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T06:18:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/558457\/"},"modified":"2026-08-04T06:18:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T06:18:09","slug":"kreios-space-to-fly-vleo-demonstration-in-nanoavionics-bus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/558457\/","title":{"rendered":"Kreios Space to fly VLEO demonstration in NanoAvionics bus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SAN FRANCISCO \u2013 Spanish startup Kreios Space announced plans Aug. 4 to conduct the first very low Earth orbit (VLEO) demonstration of its air-breathing electric propulsion (ABEP) in a Kongsberg NanoAvionics microsatellite bus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPartnering with NanoAvionics in our first in-orbit flight provides us with a satellite bus and market-leading experience necessary to allow us to test our new technology in confidence,\u201d Kreios CEO Adri\u00e1n Senar said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senar declined to comment on the timing of the flight. Kreios\u2019 website says the \u201cthe first-ever ABEP-based VLEO mission,\u201d will occur in 2027 with a second flight in 2028.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senar co-founded Kreios in 2021 with five aerospace engineering classmates from the Polytechnic School of Catalonia to develop ABEP to enable satellites to remain at an orbital altitude of about 200 kilometers. ABEP is designed to collect atmospheric gases including oxygen and nitrogen to serve as propellant for electric thrusters. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given atmospheric drag, traditional electric propulsion systems would require large quantities of propellant to remain in orbit, \u201cwhich makes either the lifetime of the satellite too short for commercial missions or the mass of propellant to carry onboard too heavy to make sense,\u201d Senar told SpaceNews by email. With Kreios\u2019 air-breathing electric propulsion, \u201cthe altitude can be sustained without requiring any propellant on board, which enables long-term missions in these altitudes at equivalent costs that you would find at 500\u201d kilometers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"438\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/rsz_kongsberg_nanoavionics_mp42_microsatellite_bus_assembly_credits_-_kongsberg_nanoavionics.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-608976\"  \/>Kongsberg NanoAvionics will customize the MP42 bus for the Kreios Space mission, integrate the optical payload, perform system testing and commission the platform.  Credit: Kongsberg NanoAvionics<\/p>\n<p>Optical payload<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kreios\u2019 ABEP will share NanoAvionics\u2019 MP42 microsatellite bus with an optical payload that has not been identified. NanoAvionics will customize the MP42 bus for the mission, integrate the optical payload, perform system testing and commission the platform, before Kreios takes operational control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFrom its very low Earth orbit, the mission will validate the performance of its ABEP thruster, take measurements of the environment, and capture sub-meter resolution images in the visible and near-infrared spectral range,\u201d according to the news release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cKreios is tackling one of the most demanding operating environments in space, and this mission joins a very short list of European VLEO initiatives,\u201d Kongsberg NanoAvionics CEO Atle W\u00f8llo said in a statement. \u201cOur engineering team has worked closely with Kreios to configure the MP42 satellite bus to the mission\u2019s specific requirements, and support the integration of Kreios\u2019 technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Growing interest<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Commercial interest in operating satellites in VLEO is growing because the altitude offers promise for high-resolution Earth observation and low-latency communications.
