Death in Paradise star Ben Miller has reflected on his time as the show’s former lead, saying that he misses DI Richard Poole.

Miller starred in series one and two of the show. His character was shockingly killed off at the start of season 3, with Kris Marshall taking on the role of DI Humphrey Goodman, the series lead.

Despite his character being killed off 12 years ago, the actor said he’d love to return to the role of DI Poole, expressing disappointment that he’s too “ruddy old” to reprise it in a prequel series.

“If I wasn’t so ruddy old, I could play him in a prequel,” Miller told Radio Times. “I loved the character and I loved the show. It just came at a slightly unfortunate time in my life.”

Miller was referring to the period in his life when he was about to become a father, making long stints away from home to film in the Caribbean impossible.

Speaking about DI Poole, Miller said his character lives on through the writing of Paraverse creator Rob Thorogood.

He said: “But I do really miss that character. And funnily enough [Paraverse creator and writer] Rob Thorogood has carried on writing stories for Richard Poole, which is quite fun, so that’s a nice way to live the character again.”

In keeping with the Death in Paradise tradition, Miller was succeeded by Marshall, who was later succeeded by Ardal O’Hanlon, Ralf Little and, most recently, Don Gilet, who currently stars as DI Mervin Wilson.

Miller previously reprised the role of DI Poole, appearing as a ghost or hallucination to DS Camille Bordey in season six.

Speaking previously about his 2021 appearance, which marked the show’s 10th anniversary, Miller was asked whether he would return to the show.

“Yeah, of course I would. It was wonderful to come back. I did come back as my character in season 10 earlier this year,” he told Radio Times.

“I came back as a ghost, so I guess anything is possible. Don’t you worry, I’ll be struggling into that wool suit. I’ll be in that wool suit before you can say Harry,” he added.

Death in Paradise and its spin-offs, Beyond Paradise and Return to Paradise, air on BBC One and stream on BBC iPlayer.
