\n\t\u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day<\/a>\u201d surpassed $1 billion globally in near-record time.<\/p>\n

\n\tSony and Marvel<\/a>\u2018s comic book adventure, starring Tom Holland as the web-slinging hero, notched the milestone after six days of release, a mind-boggling pace. Only 2019\u2019s superhero epic \u201cAvengers: Endgame,\u201d which captured a stunning $1.2 billion worldwide in its opening weekend, was faster to the coveted box office benchmark.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBrand New Day\u201d has earned $407 million in North America after four days of release, becoming the fastest film to surpass $400 million domestically. The movie also delivered the highest-grossing Monday in history with $47 million, besting the high watermark set by 2018\u2019s \u201cBlack Panther\u201d with $40 million. Overseas, the newest \u201cSpider-Man\u201d has amassed $645.8 million to date.<\/p>\n

\n\tHolland\u2019s fourth solo outing as Spider-Man has been defying box office expectations since debuting last weekend to $360 million domestically and $932 million globally. Those stratospheric ticket sales were the biggest domestic debut in box office history<\/a>, as well as the second-largest global debut of all time. Spidey\u2019s latest venture also secured the best preview haul with $72 million, as well as the highest-grossing opening day with $169.8 million. With euphoric word-of-mouth and minimal competition in the weekends ahead, \u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day\u201d will quickly climb to $2 billion, a metric that only seven other movies have ever achieved, and should rank among the highest-grossing films of all time by the end of its theatrical run.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI did not expect \u201cEndgame\u2019s\u201d [domestic] record to be beat, but I couldn\u2019t be happier that it was beat this past weekend by our 38th MCU movie,\u201d producer and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told Variety<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s overwhelming, frankly, to find ourselves in this position on a Monday morning \u2014 in the very best way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMarvel will build on the triumph of \u201cBrand New Day\u201d with \u201cAvengers: Doomsday,\u201d which reunites a smattering of superheroes (and reintroduces Robert Downey Jr. not as Iron Man but as the villain Doctor Doom) in December. Feige notes that \u201cBrand New Day\u2019s\u201d outsized success \u201cbodes very well\u201d for upcoming MCU adventures.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhen a shared universe works,\u201d he said, \u201cthese are the results.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day\u201d is the fourth movie of the year to earn $1 billion, following \u201cThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie\u201d ($1.001 billion), \u201cMichael\u201d ($1.001 billion) and \u201cToy Story 5\u201d ($1.067 billion). Christopher Nolan\u2019s \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d has grossed a remarkable $912 million to date and is about to be the fifth release of 2026 to join the billion-dollar club.<\/p>\n

\n\tIt\u2019s only August, and 2026 has already produced the most billion-dollar blockbusters since the pandemic upended the movie theater industry. In 2019, before everything changed, a record nine movies (\u201cAvengers: Endgame,\u201d \u201cThe Lion King,\u201d \u201cAladdin,\u201d \u201cJoker,\u201d \u201cSpider-Man: Far From Home\u201d and \u201cCaptain Marvel\u201d among them) \u2014 earned over $1 billion. Since then, no year had more than three films that hit the billion-dollar mark.<\/p>\n

\n\tThis year is barreling toward all kinds of box office benchmarks. Depending on the staying power of \u201cBrand New Day\u201d and \u201cThe Odyssey,\u201d Hollywood is hoping that this will be the second summer season since COVID to cross $4 billion in domestic ticket sales. So far, grosses between May and early August have tallied $3.579 billion, according to Rentrak. Meanwhile the industry is optimistic that, with tentpoles like \u201cDune 3\u201d and \u201cAvengers: Doomsday\u201d still to come, overall domestic revenues in 2026 will eclipse $10 billion for the first time since 2019.\u00a0It\u2019s a tally that the North American box office used to regularly reach in the before times.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day\u201d surpassed $1 billion globally in near-record time.
