In fact I encourage that. But taxpayers won\u2019t be paying for it. <\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt was alerted to me that this massage programme was being run, and I\u2019ve reminded Corrections of my expectations around rehabilitation.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">Asked for his thoughts on the programme, Act leader David Seymour said it would be \u201csickening\u201d for victims to hear offenders could be receiving traditional massages behind bars. <\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt\u2019s a good example of how the bureaucracy will try on this rubbish if they think we\u2019re not looking,\u201d Seymour said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">New Zealand First leader Winston Peters labelled it \u201cvoodoo BS and a waste of taxpayers\u2019 money\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">He also criticised Corrections officials. <\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAs a minister, you shouldn\u2019t have to trawl down like some sleuth on every occasion for every dollar. That should be itemised in front of you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI don\u2019t blame Mitchell; he\u2019s got an extraordinarily difficult job. He should have been told.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Rongo\u0101 M\u0101ori programmes \u2018highly successful\u2019 \u2013 provider<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">In March, when details of a wider rongo\u0101 M\u0101ori programme first surfaced, Corrections defended the plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThis service provides an all-of-person view of their health by addressing physical needs alongside their mental, emotional, spiritual and social needs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt complements and works alongside other healthcare interventions available to people in prison.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">A Corrections spokesperson said rongo\u0101 M\u0101ori services had been part of a programme in Christchurch Women\u2019s Prison since late 2024 and they were successfully piloted at Tongariro Prison from January 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cFeedback from insight surveys indicated that participants showed improved physical and mental wellbeing, and the ability to be future-focused and motivated.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">Whanganui healthcare provider Te Oranganui has been providing rongo\u0101 M\u0101ori services as part of a kaupapa M\u0101ori alcohol and drug programme at Whanganui Prison for several years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">In March, chief executive Wheturangi Walsh-Tapiata <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/whanganui-chronicle\/news\/department-of-corrections-aims-for-rongoa-maori-services-in-14-prisons\/IS24V3FJLFDSDBCHAT3KA53NYE\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/whanganui-chronicle\/news\/department-of-corrections-aims-for-rongoa-maori-services-in-14-prisons\/IS24V3FJLFDSDBCHAT3KA53NYE\/\">said rongo\u0101 M\u0101ori programmes in prison had been successful.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe find it highly successful as an alternative that sits alongside other kaupapa M\u0101ori practices or clinical approaches we offer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIncreasingly, people are looking at a duality of approaches when it comes to healing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">Ethan Griffiths is a political reporter with Newstalk ZB, based in the Parliamentary Press Gallery.
