In contrast, Australia coach Stacey Marinkovich opted for a settled line-up through pool play, but the Diamonds were exposed in the semi-final for a lack of versatility. A raft of late changes and lapses in concentration against Jamaica made Australia look ill-prepared for high-pressure moments. Taurua had the Silver Ferns thriving at the most critical times<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Taurua\u2019s contract will expire after October\u2019s Constellation Cup. It is clear she loves leading the Silver Ferns and Netball New Zealand must do everything to keep her at the helm and push for a World Cup title in Sydney next year.<\/p>\n

The audience is there<\/p>\n

Recent developments prove netball is worth the investment.<\/p>\n

The Silver Ferns\u2019 march to the Commonwealth Games final<\/a> galvanised the New Zealand public and is another stark indication of Aotearoa\u2019s love for netball. The Ferns\u2019 place in the national psyche is resolute and must be protected.<\/p>\n

Netball was the best-attended event at the Commonwealth Games, beating heavyweights athletics and swimming. The global commitment from fans is mirrored by the ANZ Premiership\u2019s<\/a> consistent attendance and viewership numbers, not to mention packed netball courts up and down the country every Saturday morning.<\/p>\n

The state of professional netball in New Zealand is an utter tragedy, but it is salvageable. Private investment is the obvious way forward and investors should be able to acquire stakes in the competition at a bargain. Acquiring third-party capital will come down to Netball New Zealand\u2019s ability to market the competition and its willingness to hand over the reins.<\/p>\n

Across the Ditch<\/p>\n

Sending Silver Ferns to Super Netball worked.<\/p>\n

The controversial decision to allow senior Silver Ferns to play club netball abroad has paid dividends at test level. Grace Nweke, Jackson, Karin Burger, Kate Heffernan<\/a> and Maddy Gordon all produced their best displays in the highest-pressure games against Jamaica and England.<\/p>\n

In past years, the Ferns have been troubled by the extra physicality of Australian-based players. In this tournament, the Kiwis were the ones initiating contact and imposing physicality on their opposition.<\/p>\n

Two years of conditioning with the New South Wales Swifts saw Nweke dominate two of the world\u2019s best defenders in Jamaica\u2019s Shamera Stirling-Humphrey and England\u2019s Funmi Fudoju. Fresh off clean-sweeping the Queensland Firebirds\u2019 awards night, Jackson pulled off momentum-altering turnovers in both finals fixtures. Gordon and Heffernan found form at the pointy end of the campaign, displaying composure beyond their years.<\/p>\n

Top quality<\/p>\n

The ANZ Premiership can produce quality test players.<\/p>\n

The exits of those senior Silver Ferns prompted justified concerns about whether the quality of the ANZ Premiership can still prepare Kiwi athletes for top-flight netball. However, the cream of the domestic competition\u2019s crop was still clearly capable of standing out at test level.<\/p>\n

One of New Zealand\u2019s best performers in the gold-medal match against Jamaica was the Southern Steel\u2019s Georgia Heffernan. The goal attack\u2019s eight out of nine goals in the final were supplementary to her 22 feeds, all while managing an injured ankle. As mentioned, Stars midcourter Reuelu-Buchanan\u2019s shift to wing defence proved a coup, while Mystics goal keep Catherine Hall<\/a> and Steel defender Carys Stythe also produced strong moments.<\/p>\n

While Amelia Walmsley and Martina Salmon are yet to meet the levels of Nweke and Georgia Heffernan, they showed plenty of promise and simply need more minutes at test level. A season in Super Netball wouldn\u2019t hurt, either.<\/p>\n

The beep-test bump<\/p>\n

The Silver Ferns are the world\u2019s fittest team.<\/p>\n

In the final quarter of the grand final, the Silver Ferns stretched to a 10-goal lead over Jamaica. The Sunshine Girls looked tired, lacking the intensity and accuracy they displayed in their historic win over Australia. There was no such problem for New Zealand, who were backing up a dominant victory over England the day before, in which they had outclassed the Roses in almost every facet. Even in the dying seconds of the final, the Kiwi defence refused to give the Jamaicans an easy route into the circle.<\/p>\n

Silly mistakes cost the other heavyweight teams. Australia\u2019s Liz Watson, usually defined by relentlessly high standards, turned away from a Kiera Austin pass back out of the circle late in the Diamonds\u2019 semi-final loss to the Sunshine Girls. In the final, Jamaica\u2019s communication breakdowns and concentration lapses stymied their own momentum swings. In contrast, New Zealand were ruthlessly accurate. That composure is only possible if the body is conditioned to allow for sharp decision-making by the brain.<\/p>\n
