{"id":560341,"date":"2026-08-06T02:10:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-06T02:10:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/560341\/"},"modified":"2026-08-06T02:10:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-06T02:10:09","slug":"pm-christopher-luxon-says-hed-hold-referendum-on-mmp-if-re-elected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/560341\/","title":{"rendered":"PM Christopher Luxon says he\u2019d hold referendum on MMP if re-elected"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">National deputy leader Nicola Willis couldn\u2019t confirm the policy had been through the party\u2019s caucus when asked by the Herald. <\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWell, the Prime Minister is the leader of the National Party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe\u2019ve previously reflected as a party that we think, in future, having a referendum on a four-year term is a good idea to get New Zealanders\u2019 feedback on the electoral system and I think, as I understand it, [Luxon] also expressed interest in getting feedback on MMP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">Asked if she was aware Luxon was going to make the commitment, Willis said: \u201cI was aware that these were views that he held and that we\u2019ve discussed in our caucus and that we\u2019ve discussed with everyday New Zealanders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">Speaking on Newstalk ZB this morning, Luxon made the statement in response to a listener who had texted in asking whether the PM would address the power held by minor parties in governing arrangements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">Luxon initially pointed to the Government working towards a referendum on whether to extend government terms from three years to four, before saying he was \u201copen\u201d to asking voters whether they were \u201cstill supportive of MMP\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">Asked if he would do so if he were Prime Minister next year, Luxon replied: \u201cYeah, I think I would.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">He added: \u201cI think I would because I actually think, you know, that it is quite right to check in constitutionally and say, \u2018Is this the system, New Zealand, you still want?\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cYou know, \u2018You voted for this in the 90s, we\u2019ve had a check-in in the [20]10s, 20 years down the road or whatever it has been, is it still where you want to be?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Christopher Luxon was taking calls on ZB this morning when he made his comments. Photo \/ Michael Craig<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">Luxon went on to talk about his 20-person Cabinet, currently made up of ministers from National, Act and New Zealand First. <\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">He argued the best way to provide a \u201cstrong and stable government\u201d was to have as many National ministers in Cabinet as possible. <\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWhen you have to form coalition governments, you don\u2019t have the same values, you don\u2019t have the same policies, you\u2019re not talking to the same people. <\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cYou try and find the common ground and I feel like I have done the best I can in two and a half years to find common ground on the economy, law and order, education and health. <\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI think you\u2019ve got to ask the question, I feel like I\u2019ve got responsible, sensible ministers delivering: Mark Mitchell, Todd McClay, Erica Stanford, Nicola Willis, Simeon Brown, Chris Bishop. You know, I\u2019ve got amazing people doing incredible work who take it very seriously. <\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThe question is, I keep saying, I don\u2019t need some yahoo or numpty from some other party around that table. I can do a lot more to get the centre-right agenda, centre being the operative word, done and out the door so think about your vote, November 7. It\u2019s important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">Asked if his current coalition partners were yahoos and numpties, Luxon replied: \u201cNo, I\u2019m just saying I can do better with National Party ministers. Photo \/ Mark Mitchell <\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">Speaking to the Herald, Seymour said he wasn\u2019t certain whether Luxon was calling his ministers yahoos and numpties. <\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWho knows, I suspect that he\u2019s being a bit free-wheeling and may not have thought through what he\u2019s saying there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">Seymour noted how several National ministers had been dismissed during this term before pointing to work achieved by Act ministers, including on school attendance and reforms concerning the Holidays Act, Arms Act and the Resource Management Act.<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI\u2019m not here to start bagging other parties\u2019 ministers but I think anyone who\u2019s an objective observer would say that Act ministers have been pretty effective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">On a referendum, Seymour said he wasn\u2019t opposed but said any change would be unlikely to be implemented until the 2032 or 2035 elections and there were \u201cmore urgent problems\u201d to address.<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">In a statement on social media, Peters commended MMP for having \u201cbroke the stranglehold\u201d of Labour and National on \u201crunning roughshod over our economy without social licence\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cNow that the two old parties are losing their grip on power, they want to change the electoral system to favour their falling fortunes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">Referencing the previous referendums in 1993 and 2011, Peters said people wanted different representation in Parliament than what Labour and National could provide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThe old parties\u2019 weak and inept attitude to economic sovereignty, immigration, and woke nonsense has seen people move to a party that is offering common sense, patriotism, and old-fashioned Kiwi values.<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cShutting down and taking away true democratic representation from the people of New Zealand should be seen for what it is \u2013 a power grab and an ignorance for what it means to be a democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">Willis, asked to comment on Luxon\u2019s surprise announcement in light of last week\u2019s surprise rule-out of Opportunity, believed it was good to have a PM who \u201cgives you open, honest answers\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">On MMP, Willis said the voting system had its \u201ccritics\u201d and its \u201cchampions\u201d, but she said a referendum should be completed before any changes were made. <\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">Labour leader Chris Hipkins said Luxon had let Seymour and Peters \u201crun circles around him\u201d, and accused Luxon of wanting to change the electoral system because he could not manage the coalition. <\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI think what Christopher Luxon is showing is that he has no idea how to manage MMP. He has no idea how to manage his job as Prime Minister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">Former leaders like Sir John Key and Helen Clark had been able to run \u201cpragmatic and sensible\u201d governments without being beholden to smaller parties despite the need for their votes, he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cChristopher Luxon had failed to do that.
