{"id":561293,"date":"2026-08-07T01:00:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-07T01:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/561293\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T01:00:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T01:00:09","slug":"missing-woman-74-found-hypothermic-in-gully-above-retirement-village","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/561293\/","title":{"rendered":"Missing woman, 74, found hypothermic in gully above retirement village"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  [&amp;_p]:tit-sub-xl tit-sub-xl md:[&amp;_p]:d-tit-sub-xl md:d-tit-sub-xl mb-[1.3rem]\">A 74-year-old woman who did not return from her regular afternoon walk was found hypothermic in a steep gully above her Nelson retirement village on Wednesday and carried out by search crews.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Police were alerted around nightfall on one of the coldest nights of the year, and began area checks while a police search and rescue dog team was called in from Blenheim to work alongside Land Search and Rescue Nelson volunteers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Teams concentrated on a steep gully of grass and native bush directly above the village, finding the woman about 8.30pm near the bush edge in difficult terrain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">She had been exposed to the cold for several hours and was showing signs of hypothermia, though she was not seriously injured, police said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Volunteers carried her out of the gully on a stretcher before St John staff took her to hospital.
