They will need to maintain that level of physicality, because when the Warriors play with that intensity, they almost appear unbeatable.<\/p>\n

When the two sides met earlier this season, the Panthers edged the Warriors 20-18<\/a> in a contest where the statistics were near identical, with the scoreboard the only meaningful point of difference. <\/p>\n Despite both teams missing State of Origin stars and the Warriors being ravaged by injuries, that clash was widely regarded as a match worthy of a grand final.<\/p>\n The Warriors were left to rue five missed opportunities to score<\/a> what could have been the match-winning try, denied by the finest of margins or moments of Panthers brilliance on defence.<\/p>\n This time, they ensured the game wasn\u2019t defined by tight calls.<\/p>\n The Warriors were far more clinical with the ball, while their defence stood tall for long periods to deny Penrith the momentum they so often thrive on.<\/p>\n As mentioned before kickoff, it was vital the Warriors won the opening exchanges<\/a>, and that is exactly what they did.<\/p>\n While you cannot win a game in the opening exchanges, you can certainly lose it, and the Warriors\u2019 early dominance put the Panthers on the back foot from the outset.<\/p>\n The Panthers have now conceded a try in the opening five minutes of their last four games, and while they have been able to fight back from those early setbacks against inferior opposition, the Warriors proved to be a class above, with their players finding form at the pointy end of the season.<\/p>\n There was one moment when it looked as though Nathan Cleary might orchestrate another trademark comeback but, unlike so many times before, the Warriors refused to buckle and closed out one of their most significant victories of the season.<\/p>\n The return of Metcalf<\/p>\n Warriors halfback dazzles with career-best game<\/p>\n When Luke Metcalf was called into the Warriors side as a late replacement for the injured Te Maire Martin<\/a>, there was plenty of excitement \u2013 but also a hint of anxiety.<\/p>\n Fans had been desperate to see Metcalf get another opportunity, but there were understandable reservations after his first comeback from an ACL injury earlier this season, when he played five-eighth. He was clearly underdone and appeared to have been rushed back too soon, ultimately falling down the pecking order<\/a> and deciding to leave the club at the end of the season.<\/p>\n But back in his preferred No 7 jersey against the Panthers, Metcalf couldn\u2019t have scripted a better return. <\/p>\n In what was arguably his best performance in a Warriors jersey, Metcalf scored two tries, assisted another, broke six tackles and gave the Warriors great field position with more than 800m off the boot.<\/p>\n More importantly, he provided the attacking spark and point of difference the Warriors had been missing.<\/p>\n His biggest contribution, however, came when the game threatened to slip away from the Warriors.<\/p>\n After racing to a 22-0 lead, the Panthers hit back with two quick tries and suddenly there was a sense of unease around Go Media Stadium.<\/p>\n With five minutes remaining, the visitors thought they had scored another, only for the try to be ruled out.<\/p>\n The Warriors have struggled to close out games against the NRL\u2019s top sides this season, but this time they had Metcalf.<\/p>\n With the Panthers threatening to mount an unlikely comeback, the halfback stepped up when his side needed him most, scoring his second try to put the result beyond doubt and help secure the Warriors\u2019 biggest win of the season.<\/p>\n While Warriors coach Andrew Webster is keeping his cards close to his chest about whether Martin could come straight back into the side, it is clear Metcalf needs the keys if they are to contend for their maiden premiership.<\/p>\n They have found their X-factor before the finals.<\/p>\n Leka Halasima also deserves praise for his efforts at centre, where he has certainly locked down that position for the rest of the season.<\/p>\n A rare win over Penrith<\/p>\n Why beating the Panthers is a special feeling<\/p>\n Beating the Panthers felt like a long time coming for the Warriors, almost as if a weight had been lifted from their shoulders after finally proving they can compete with the side that has dominated the NRL in recent years.<\/p>\n Since entering the NRL, Penrith have been something of a bogey team for the Warriors. This was their 20th win over the Panthers in 56 meetings, their second victory against them in seven years and their first in Auckland since 2018. <\/p>\n While Penrith have dominated the fixture over the years, it remains a special contest because of the strong connections between the two clubs.<\/p>\n Warriors coach Andrew Webster previously worked under Ivan Cleary at the Panthers<\/a>, while James Fisher-Harris, Wayde Egan, Kurt Capewell and Dallin Watene-Zelezniak have all previously called Penrith home.<\/p>\n Cleary himself finished his playing career with the Warriors before coaching the Auckland-based club during their most successful period.<\/p>\n Several Panthers players also have connections to the Warriors, having previously spent time at the club, primarily through the reserve grades.<\/p>\n Adding another layer to the rivalry is Penrith\u2019s dominance when the two sides have met in the finals.<\/p>\n The Panthers have beaten the Warriors in all four (2003, 2018, 2023, 2025) of their finals meetings, including last season\u2019s clash in Auckland.<\/p>\n The two games between the sides this season have certainly lived up to the billing and there is little doubt another high-quality affair would be on the cards should they meet again in the finals.<\/p>\n The Warriors have finally overcome one of their biggest hurdles.
