{"id":563266,"date":"2026-08-08T23:48:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-08T23:48:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/563266\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T23:48:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T23:48:09","slug":"election-2026-christopher-luxon-nicola-willis-reveal-nationals-new-economic-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/563266\/","title":{"rendered":"Election 2026: Christopher Luxon, Nicola Willis reveal National\u2019s new economic policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">According to the Budget Economic and Fiscal Update (BEFU) unveiled in May, the Government is already on track to achieve a surplus by 2028\/29 when using its new metric of OBEGALx &#8211; operating balance before gains and losses excluding ACC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">Net core Crown debt is expected to peak at 46.1% of GDP in the 2027\/28 year, before then slowly declining. <\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">In the outer year of the BEFU forecasts, it is predicted to be 44.4%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">In terms of core Crown expenses, BEFU showed it falling to 30.3% of GDP in the outer year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">Labour  meanwhile unveiled additional small business policies this morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">They include setting a target to have 15% of Government contracts going to small businesses as well as breaking up big contracts into smaller jobs \u201cwhere it makes sense\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">The party will look at how information can be shared between agencies so businesses don\u2019t have to share the same information multiple times. <\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">It will task Inland Revenue with reviewing provisional tax and filing requirements to ensure \u201cthe system works for small businesses\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">Labour also plans to require ministers and agencies to consider what new regulations, procurement rules and other policies may mean specifically for small businesses before they are approved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWhile Christopher Luxon insults small businesses and asks, \u2018who cares what the Government thinks\u2019, we\u2019re listening to small businesses and making government work better for them,\u201d Labour\u2019s finance spokeswoman Barbara Edmonds said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">The part<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/labour-to-scrap-investment-boost-if-elected-under-new-plan-for-small-businesses\/2Q6FJFC4YRDF3FT5M55FLGQCIA\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/labour-to-scrap-investment-boost-if-elected-under-new-plan-for-small-businesses\/2Q6FJFC4YRDF3FT5M55FLGQCIA\/\" target=\"_blank\">y earlier in the week already announced several<\/a> business policies, including  increasing the asset write-off threshold from $1000 to $10,000, something that will come at the cost of the Government\u2019s Investment Boost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">That <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/rotorua-daily-post\/news\/prime-minister-christopher-luxon-responds-to-rotorua-business-owners-deflated-economic-confidence\/ENGVI3TFNNELXMZOKWBABIUJ3I\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/rotorua-daily-post\/news\/prime-minister-christopher-luxon-responds-to-rotorua-business-owners-deflated-economic-confidence\/ENGVI3TFNNELXMZOKWBABIUJ3I\/\" target=\"_blank\">follows Luxon telling businesses at a Rotorua event last week <\/a>that they were taking a \u201cnegative view\u201d of economic conditions and  insisting businesses should act like adults.<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/christopher-luxon-faces-questions-over-claim-businesses-negative-should-act-like-an-adult\/VL6MTTUVRRFZ7B5GT7YKWGFO54\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/christopher-luxon-faces-questions-over-claim-businesses-negative-should-act-like-an-adult\/VL6MTTUVRRFZ7B5GT7YKWGFO54\/\" target=\"_blank\">later apologised for those comments<\/a>, admitting they \u201cdidn\u2019t properly acknowledge the challenges that many small business owners are facing\u201d and that he was willing to \u201ccop it\u201d and \u201cown it\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"GVVHMTqjHdqyH\" style=\"display:none\">Jamie Ensor is the NZ Herald\u2019s chief political reporter, based in the press gallery at Parliament.
