Westlife, former Disney star Hilary Duff, and System of a Down are heading our way in the next 12 months. So are TLC and Macy Gray. <\/p>\n
Some acts are on anniversary tours, marking 20, 25 or even 30 years since releasing key albums, like US R&B stalwarts Boyz II Men, folk-rocker Cat Power, and Northern Irish bands Ash and Two Door Cinema Club.<\/p>\n
Millennial acts are hitting NZ shores with a bang.<\/p>\n
On the local front, the legendary Che Fu is hitting the road on a 10-date tour in November to mark the 25th anniversary of his hit album, Navigator, and Fat Freddy\u2019s Drop recently announced two Based On A True Story 21st Anniversary shows in Nelson for January 2027.<\/p>\n
Demand for millennial acts is also strong overseas \u2013 clearly there is money to be made. <\/p>\n
For example, the Backstreet Boys\u2019 Las Vegas residency is estimated to be making US$4 million ($6.8m) per night, according to People.<\/p>\n
But what\u2019s causing this millennial mania? And will such tours be sustainable?<\/p>\n
AUT Communication Studies lecturer and guitarist for New Zealand band Villainy, Thomas Watts, says it\u2019s not just nostalgia making these gigs popular.<\/p>\n
He describes the psychological concept of a \u201creminiscence bump\u201d, where people remember music from their teens and early 20s more vividly because it\u2019s tied to major life experiences, such as first relationships and heartbreaks.<\/p>\n
That emotional attachment makes anniversary tours more of a draw.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think nostalgia\u2019s a super key one,\u201d Watts says. <\/p>\n
\u201cBut I also think there\u2019s like a level of rediscovery of artists by new generations. <\/p>\n
\u201cDeftones, as an example, got rediscovered on TikTok in a really massive way. A whole bunch of younger Gen Z people online were like, \u2018These guys are really good\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
Empire of the Sun, who headlined last year\u2019s Electric Avenue Festival in Christchurch, have also found a significant resurgence through TikTok, proof that millennial acts are cutting through the age gaps.<\/p>\n
The Pixies, who toured New Zealand this year, have had a similar resurgence with their 1988 song Where Is My Mind used in multiple online trends.<\/p>\n

Having a strong hook, like an online presence or link to current pop culture, keeps acts relevant.<\/p>\n
\u201cAn act like [Canadian pop punk band] Simple Plan makes sense where they have had both the millennial resurgence, but also they\u2019ve got a really good social media presence where they are posting all of the time.\u201d<\/p>\n
The question is whether the appetite for millennial acts will waver as audiences grow older. This will come down to the longevity of the music, NZ Promoters\u2019 Association president and promoter Layton Lillas says.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf a song continues to be played in bars for a new generation, then it\u2019s not unknown for bands to look out and see two-three generations of fans in the audience.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lillas has seen this trend before with touring acts from the 80s, and says concert demand tends to peak when fans hit different life stages.<\/p>\n
The increase in millennial-targeted tours, he says, may be due to retiring 70s and 80s heritage acts like Sir Elton John and Fleetwood Mac leaving a \u201cgaping hole\u201d in the touring market for younger acts to fill. <\/p>\n
\u201cAnniversaries, as we move through our life, always add to the nostalgic value of the concert. We love to recall a happy time from the past, which is generally tied up with the bands we were listening to back in the day,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n
Lillas also notes fans who grew up listening to these artists may now have more disposable income for concert tickets.<\/p>\n
\u201c[Some of those are] child fans \u2013 from around the year 2000 \u2013 who are now out of their parents\u2019 house and finished uni and earning money to spend on events, but are not yet in family life,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen a band\u2019s fanbase is in the \u2018family life\u2019 phase, things get hard, as those people are no longer going out as much and are focused on the household. The second phase happens when the kids are teens, and you have more time on your hands to go out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eccles Entertainment\u2019s Brent Eccles says punters often buy tickets for artists whose catalogue they know well, which fits with millennial acts.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat always helps any act sell tickets,\u201d he says, \u201cespecially with New Zealand artists.\u201d<\/p>\n
But Lillas warns too many similar tours at the same time could hurt ticket sales.<\/p>\n
\u201cToo much of a good thing can be detrimental to the box office,\u201d he says. \u201cThere\u2019s got to be a reason for people to part with their money, and sometimes, if they have just seen the group two years ago, this time they skip it. Likewise, if there is too much crossover with touring acts, people will be forced to make a decision.\u201d<\/p>\n
Watts says that while these acts are \u201cdefinitely not a never-ending cash cow,\u201d if there\u2019s money to be made and audiences that want it, those millennial acts will continue to tour.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re in this really interesting time with media consumption where there\u2019s been so much audience fragmentation.\u201d<\/p>\n
Millennials experienced one of the last eras of shared musical culture, he says, part of the appeal of coming together for a shared experience at a live event.<\/p>\n
\u201cMillennials have that feeling that everyone consumed an element of the same thing. The further we get, the more fragmentation kind of exists.\u201d<\/p>\n
