Anne Hathaway has covered a lot of ground in 2026. She played a global pop sensation in Mother Mary<\/a>, believably reprised her role as Andy Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada 2<\/a>, embodied the queen of Ithaca in The Odyssey<\/a>, and fought her way through a sci-fi disaster scenario as Denise Platt in The End of Oak Street. After all that, her biggest acting challenge of the year is still to come: a character with believable motivations in a Colleen Hoover adaptation. Verity, based on Hoover\u2019s 2018 best-selling psychological thriller of the same name, is out October 2, and a new trailer for the movie hints at the uphill battle Hathaway has ahead of her.<\/p>\n Hathway plays Verity Crawford, a best-selling author who mysteriously loses her ability to walk, talk, and write. To finish her final book, her husband, Jeremy (Josh Hartnett), brings in an emerging writer named Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson) to complete the series. At various points in the trailer, Hathaway\u2019s Verity is terrifying as a barely mobile woman in a wheelchair, menacing as the author of an unpublished autobiography, and violent as a shapeshifter who spontaneously possesses her husband\u2019s body while he\u2019s making out with Lowen (?). \u201cA writer\u2019s words should be honest, and bloody, and a little bit terrifying,\u201d Verity says at one point. Sounds like an apt description of Hoover\u2019s work if ever there was one. It\u2019s just missing one qualifier: They should also make a shit ton of money at the box office.
