{"id":568123,"date":"2026-08-13T20:12:10","date_gmt":"2026-08-13T20:12:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/568123\/"},"modified":"2026-08-13T20:12:10","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T20:12:10","slug":"northland-severe-thunderstorm-warning-lifted-east-coast-still-under-heavy-rain-warning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/568123\/","title":{"rendered":"Northland severe thunderstorm warning lifted, East Coast still under heavy rain warning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"bcxzNmxesLZ\" style=\"display:none\">Conditions could still be dangerous after the storm had passed, according to National Emergency Management Agency advice shared by MetService.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bcxzNmxesLZ\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cDuring and after the storm you should also beware of fallen trees and power lines [and] avoid streams and drains as you may be swept away in flash flooding,\u201d that advice says.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy rain warnings, watches for eastern areas<\/p>\n<p class=\"bcxzNmxesLZ\" style=\"display:none\">Parts of the North Island are forecast to be battered by heavy rain this weekend, as a front sweeps up the country, bringing colder temperatures and a risk of frosts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bcxzNmxesLZ\" style=\"display:none\">MetService meteorologist Alwyn Bakker told the Herald the weekend\u2019s weather would grow increasingly unsettled before easing off into early next week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bcxzNmxesLZ\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt\u2019s going to get quite wet on the east coast of the North Island.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"bcxzNmxesLZ\" style=\"display:none\">Several heavy rain warnings and watches will be in place throughout today for eastern parts of the country, with more potentially on the way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bcxzNmxesLZ\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThat\u2019s more in the kind of we might need to put a watch out territory rather than lots of exciting stuff happening, everybody prepare now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"bcxzNmxesLZ\" style=\"display:none\">The Bay of Plenty about and east of Kawerau is under watch until 9am, while Gisborne north of Tolaga Bay is under a heavy rain warning until 8pm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bcxzNmxesLZ\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe had a trough over most of the country yesterday, a low approaching the upper North Island from the Tasman Sea.
