Photo / Dean Purcell

The ride comes after a series of highly scrutinised mass cycling events across Auckland earlier this year, which prompted significant police operations and sparked debate over road safety and the treatment of young riders.

Most notable was the Tour De Hoods series in May, organised by YouTuber and “bikelife” advocate Kimami Ngaluafe. The rides attracted hundreds of cyclists and were promoted as a way to bring communities together while providing a positive outlet for young people.

Police maintained a strong presence at each event, citing concerns around rider safety and traffic disruption.

In West Auckland on May 10 about 120 cyclists travelled from Henderson to New Lynn. Police arrested four people, impounded one bike and issued 53 infringement notices, alleging some riders crossed centre lines, rode into oncoming traffic and performed dangerous stunts.

A week later, about 250 riders travelled from Onehunga to Mt Roskill. Police described behaviour as “generally okay”, issuing seven infringement notices, largely for helmet and riding-related offences.

Another ride from Glen Innes to Queens Wharf on May 24 drew an estimated 250 to 500 cyclists and was similarly monitored by police.

Despite concerns raised around some riders’ behaviour, police have repeatedly stressed the events themselves are not illegal.

Inspector Wayne Kitcher previously said police do not regard the groups as a gang, but officers would continue enforcing road rules where riders endangered themselves or others.

The rides also became the focus of controversy after a former police officer was widely criticised for suggesting on social media that a wire cable should be strung across a road at head height to stop riders. Police distanced themselves from the comments, saying the man had left the force two years earlier.

Police monitored the event throughout the day to ensure the safety of cyclists and other road users.
