His highly saturated photographs were held by institutions including Tate, the Centre Pompidou and New York\u2019s Museum of Modern Art.<\/p>\n
Jeffares said photographers\u2019 excitement when they heard Parr was coming to Hawke\u2019s Bay made clear how significant landing the exhibition was.<\/p>\n
The 40 photographs in Small World, largely shot during the 1980s and 1990s, document tourists around the globe, capturing the humour and contradictions of mass tourism.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re so bright, they\u2019re colourful, they\u2019re witty,\u201d Jeffares said.<\/p>\n

Among his favourites is an image of skiers passing a postcard stand in the Alps.<\/p>\n
Another captures tourists absorbed in their phones while artworks hang behind them.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo one was looking at the beautiful space that they\u2019re in,\u201d Jeffares said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s caught people at the specific time that just sort of captures a snapshot of a moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jeffares said Fotofest shared Parr\u2019s philosophy of making photography accessible to everyone.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe probably could have charged a $20 door fee for people to come in and see it, but that\u2019s not our personal philosophy either,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want Fotofest to always be free.\u201d<\/p>\n
While Small World will headline the festival, Fotofest will again spread visual storytelling beyond traditional galleries.<\/p>\n
Exhibitions, workshops, and coffee and camera talks are expected across Napier, Ahuriri, Hastings and Havelock North during the festival.<\/p>\n
Among them will be Murray Cammick\u2019s black-and-white photographs of rock musicians who toured New Zealand during the 1970s and 1980s, and Tara Swan\u2019s work documenting the wild Kaimanawa horses.<\/p>\n
Jeffares said the physical exhibitions offered something increasingly uncommon in a world where photographs were overwhelmingly consumed through screens.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve got so used to it now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo being able to actually step back and look at something that\u2019s printed and admire the image in its true form \u2026 is really encouraging.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jeffares said the event was also a chance to push the festival towards participation rather than simply viewing photographs.<\/p>\n
\u201cBuilding new connections, talking with new people, making new friends, being part of the whole community and the vibe. That\u2019s really what I want to see happening more this year,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, we\u2019ve brought a whole lot more opportunities for people to get involved.
