The judge<\/a> described the offending as \u201cvery serious\u201d and \u201cdegrading\u201d, while A\u2019s mother said she lived with guilt for not being able to protect her daughter.<\/p>\nSeeing her daughter self-harm in the years after the assaults, \u201cbroke me\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI see her struggle … I failed to protect her when she needed me most.<\/p>\n
\u201cI will hold this guilt for the rest of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n
Most details of Goodwin\u2019s offending cannot be reported due to the victims\u2019 automatic name suppression, but it can be described as expansive and degrading.<\/p>\n
Goodwin held his first young victim down and raped her.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe was yelling at you to get off you, and tried to push you away,\u201d the judge said.<\/p>\n
He then took photos, \u201cin the most sexually explicit way\u201d, before telling her he would publish them online if she told anyone what happened.<\/p>\n
The second victim was even younger than the first.<\/p>\n
Over about 12 months, he forced her to perform sexual acts on numerous occasions.<\/p>\n
Judge Crayton said given her young age, she had no appreciation of the abuse Goodwin was subjecting her to.<\/p>\n
Crown prosecutor Amy Alcock said as Goodwin pleaded on the morning of trial, she suggested a credit of 10%, given the victims didn\u2019t have to give evidence.<\/p>\n
However, there was nothing in the prepared reports that indicated remorse.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s no insight but no denial at least,\u201d the judge replied.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not a mitigation but at least … there\u2019s not been a \u2018Oh I only entered a plea to get it over and done with\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
Alcock labelled the offending as \u201cdegrading\u201d and a \u201cpredatory course of sexual abuse\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cPrison is really the only outcome here today.\u201d<\/p>\n
She pushed for a starting point of 11-and-a-half years, with an uplift of four to five years for the first victim.<\/p>\n
She also pushed for a minimum term of imprisonment [MPI] of at least 50%.<\/p>\n
Judge Crayton said he would issue one, but it was a matter of how long.<\/p>\n
The MPI was the main issue of contention for Goodwin\u2019s lawyer, Scarlett Hartstone, who acknowledged the \u201cgrave\u201d offending and that a long sentence of imprisonment was warranted, but urged the judge against issuing an MPI.<\/p>\n
Judge Crayton said the offending had been \u201cutterly life-changing\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou have robbed that child who you abused of their adolescence, of their innocence … you have taken away their opportunity to live a normal life.\u201d<\/p>\n
He noted that his pleas came when the victims would have expected to give evidence, but the fact that they didn\u2019t had to be acknowledged.<\/p>\n
He accepted Goodwin\u2019s offending could be properly categorised as \u201cpredatory\u201d.<\/p>\n
The scale of offending was significant, and aggravated by his threat to post images online and \u201cblackmail her into silence\u201d.<\/p>\n
The pictures were \u201cplainly degrading\u201d, while the harm to the victims was high.<\/p>\n
It was hoped that with sentencing, the healing process for both victims could begin.<\/p>\n
The judge took an overall starting point of 15 years\u2019 jail before allowing 10% for his guilty pleas.<\/p>\n
Judge Crayton jailed Goodwin for 13 years and six months and issued an MPI of 45%.<\/p>\n
However, he noted that Goodwin would be unlikely to attend rehabilitative courses until he neared the end of his MPI.<\/p>\n
