Bellamy said he was “surprised” by Slater’s call to end his Maroons coaching tenure.

“I haven’t spoken to Billy about that, or why, but Billy is a guy that knows what he wants and what he doesn’t want,” the Storm mentor said on Wednesday.

“He’s made the decision and that’s the right decision for him and his family, so we’ll back that up.”

Bellamy said Slater would “do a great job” as Storm coach, but other candidates, including his three current assistants – Marc Brentnall, Aaron Bellamy and Ryan Hinchcliffe – would also handle the task.

“They’d do good job too,” he said.

“It’ll be up to the hierarchy to decide that, and I’d imagine I’ll be asked my opinion.

“I’d like to see the next head coach come from our club because I think they can handle it. I’d like to the club go that way, but the final decision won’t be mine.”

The Storm, who is set to miss the finals for the first time in 16 years, host second-placed Penrith at AAMI Park on Thursday.

“They probably are the team to beat (for the premiership) with the experiences that they’ve had,” Bellamy said of the Panthers, who won four successive NRL grand finals from 2021 to 2024 before falling a week short of the decider last year.

“Penrith have got used to winning over the last five or six years.”

Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy wants a Storm man to be his successor, whether it’s Billy Slater or someone…

[9
111,139,69,213
post-573607","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-sports","tag-new-zealand","tag-newzealand","tag-nz","tag-sports
["GET
