The Viva Guest Edit: NZFW, presented by Zeekr, hands over the reins to industry insiders who are taking over Viva this week. They\u2019ll be sharing their thoughts, experiences and opinions as they take part in the biggest week in NZ fashion.<\/p>\n

\n Today, we welcome model Alex Cater to the Guest
\n Edit chair. Signed to 62 Management in June, Cater quickly booked 10 shows at this year\u2019s Fashion Week, which agent Arnika Tamatoa says is \u201can incredible achievement for such a new face to the industry\u201d.\n <\/p>\n

Cater spoke with Viva\u2019s Ashleigh Cometti from the Northern Club after appearing in Claudia Li\u2019s Wednesday show. It\u2019s a welcome return for Cater \u2013 Li\u2019s 2025 show was her first NZFW booking.<\/p>\n

Ashleigh Cometti: What was the energy like backstage before Claudia Li\u2019s show?<\/p>\n

Alex Cater: When you\u2019re backstage, it\u2019s so exciting to finally see everyone in their looks and the whole show coming together. The energy is always super hype, with some controlled chaos and nerves. Before you know it, it\u2019s all over.<\/p>\n

As one of NZFW\u2019s most in-demand models, which show are you most excited about?<\/p>\n

I\u2019m walking in 10 shows this year \u2013 the opening show, Juliette Hogan, Khadi beyond borders, The Studio, Claudia Li, Future of Fashion, K\u0101hui Collective, Zambesi, The Iconic and Viva Greatest Hits. Each show brings such a unique energy and style that I can\u2019t help but be excited for all of them. Claudia Li last year was the first NZ Fashion Week show I walked for. I\u2019m super excited to be back, and I adore the garments.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s something you wish you knew at the start of your career that you know now?<\/p>\n

I first started modelling when I was 19. To me, modelling was such an important journey for my creative expression and confidence and if I could go back in time I would tell myself to not be afraid to go out there and be a little bit different and weird, you know? <\/p>\n

What beauty or wellness rituals do you follow before NZFW and throughout the week to ensure you\u2019re feeling your best?<\/p>\n

Leading up to fashion week, I try to take really good care of my skin. I keep my routine really simple and hydrating, and wear sunscreen, always. Throughout the week and between shows, I\u2019m always listening to music that keeps my energy levels high. Love some house, techno, 90s RnB and Charli xcx. And of course I make sure my eyebrows are freshly bleached for the next show day.<\/p>\n

How do you pass the time backstage?<\/p>\n

I love meeting new people and sneaking some behind-the-scenes photos with my film camera. Time goes surprisingly fast backstage, so I often don\u2019t have much time to read, but I\u2019m currently rereading The Odyssey to wind down in the evenings.<\/p>\n

What excites you most about the future of the modelling industry in New Zealand?<\/p>\n

I think the fashion and modelling industries have gotten so much more exposure, visibility and accessibility. I\u2019m really excited for the amount of diversity and inclusivity that will bring.<\/p>\n

What advice would you give to someone wanting to model in New Zealand?<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a lot of work behind the scenes that goes into developing your model portfolio. I started by getting involved in my local fashion scene and reaching out to fashion students, designers and creatives, or even a friend with a nice camera. Modelling is a super collaborative process.<\/p>\n

At the moment I\u2019m really enjoying scarves, or wearing ties as scarves.<\/p>\n

Favourite fashion content creator? <\/p>\n

When I was younger, I loved Bestdressed\u2019s fashion vlogs on YouTube. Now I would have to say Wisdom Kaye.<\/p>\n
