The way the scrums were judged by Carley in the first test was crucial with South Africa dominating the set-piece play, winning several scrum penalties until Rennie made changes to his front row. The All Blacks won a 55th-minute scrum penalty on their own line before taking over the test match with a strong final quarter.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s impossible to discuss something with the referee with the other coach present,\u201d Erasmus added. \u201cI\u2019m going to say, \u2018Listen, we are concerned about this in the scrums\u2019, and he\u2019s going to say, \u2018But we do this in the scrums\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou might say, \u2018These guys really clean out well at the breakdown \u2026 will you be looking at that?\u2019 But you can\u2019t have that discussion in front of the referee, because then the opposition coach knows that\u2019s what you\u2019re looking at.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo what do you discuss with the referee? Boys, are you going to play within the laws? The laws of the game are the laws, so it\u2019s almost impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n
After the first test win Rennie said scrums are always up for debate.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ll always debate scrums and when you\u2019re penalised you question whether they\u2019re walking around,\u201d Rennie said. \u201cThey got penalised for walking around eventually and that was probably a key moment of the game.<\/p>\n
