US President Donald Trump says it’s “time to teach Canada you can’t do this anymore” as a trade war between the two countries escalates. <\/p>\n
He made the comments in an interview on the Glenn Beck Programme today.<\/p>\n
“I had a deal, that was a pretty good deal, you know, quite good,” Trump told the conservative commentator. <\/p>\n
“They don’t have anything that we have to have, OK? We can get by. I mean, there are a couple of things that would make it a little inconvenient, but we can get them elsewhere. And it’s time to teach Canada you can’t do this anymore.”<\/p>\n
It comes as it was announced Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney would address the European Parliament next month, a high-profile visit that underscores Canada\u2019s push to deepen ties with Europe amid the fallout with their neighbour.<\/p>\n
A statement from Carney\u2019s office Thursday said the prime minister will also attend the European Union\u2019s annual State of the Union address.<\/p>\n
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is scheduled to deliver her annual State of the Union address September 16, with Carney attending as a guest of honour before addressing lawmakers the following day. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said in a social media post that the visit would be “an opportunity to deepen EU-Canada ties and strengthen our bond”.<\/p>\n
On Saturday, Trump imposed new 50% tariffs<\/a> on about US$20 billion (NZ$33.6 billion) worth of Canadian goods.<\/p>\n
