{"id":582327,"date":"2026-08-27T21:32:11","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T21:32:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/582327\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T21:32:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T21:32:11","slug":"pet-costs-surge-people-going-without-luxuries-to-cover-higher-costs-for-animals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/582327\/","title":{"rendered":"Pet costs surge: People going without luxuries to cover higher costs for animals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"TpGGueVENmajZwYgWe\" style=\"display:none\">Only 26.4% have made similar cutbacks to luxuries for their pets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"TpGGueVENmajZwYgWe\" style=\"display:none\">The survey of more than 1100 New Zealanders with pets has also found 21.3% of respondents have chosen cheaper pet food brands or products in recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"TpGGueVENmajZwYgWe\" style=\"display:none\">Some 10.2% have reduced how often they took their pet to the vet for routine wellness check-ups.<\/p>\n<p class=\"TpGGueVENmajZwYgWe\" style=\"display:none\">Many respondents had made lifestyle changes, with 8.7% seeking additional work and income and 3.1% reducing the number of pets they had.<\/p>\n<p class=\"TpGGueVENmajZwYgWe\" style=\"display:none\">When asked what pet-related cost had increased the most, 56.7% said pet food, 23.3% said vet fees, 7.7% said grooming, and 4.7% said pet daycare.<\/p>\n<p class=\"TpGGueVENmajZwYgWe\" style=\"display:none\">PD Insurance chief operating officer Michelle Le Long said New Zealanders are more likely to reduce their own discretionary spending than compromise on their pets\u2019 wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"TpGGueVENmajZwYgWe\" style=\"display:none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/pets-are-now-part-of-the-family-and-factored-into-big-decisions\/S3365ZEKR5DN3PRBFMAD2GXYOU\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/pets-are-now-part-of-the-family-and-factored-into-big-decisions\/S3365ZEKR5DN3PRBFMAD2GXYOU\/\">Recent polling<\/a> shows most New Zealanders think of their pets as family members, mirroring similar surveys in Australia and the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"TpGGueVENmajZwYgWe\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWhile some pet owners are switching to more affordable pet food brands or scaling back on treats and extras, the overall picture is one of people making personal sacrifices to continue providing the best care they can for their pets,\u201d Le Long said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"TpGGueVENmajZwYgWe\" style=\"display:none\">Consumer NZ campaigns adviser Abby Damen has previously told Newstalk ZB people shouldn\u2019t underestimate the ongoing responsibilities and costs involved in having a pet, including pet food, vet visits, grooming, training and pet sitters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"TpGGueVENmajZwYgWe\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThat\u2019s not even covering all the exciting things you\u2019ll probably find yourself wanting to buy a pet. I certainly have spent more than I probably should on my miniature Schnauzer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"TpGGueVENmajZwYgWe\" style=\"display:none\">SPCA scientific officer Alison Vaughan told Newstalk ZB last year the organisation regularly received calls from people asking for help with rising costs and adopting animals from a reputable rescue agency was often the cheapest option in the long term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"TpGGueVENmajZwYgWe\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI have cats at home, and they are just as happy with a cardboard box as the fancy bed.
