The second returns to the Before Times, where the underground project is nearing completion and an increasingly uneasy Daniel Keene (Ashley Zukerman) and Helen Drew (Jessica Henwick) discover just how quickly their world can change.

Together, they make episode nine one of the season’s most consequential – and unsettling – instalments yet.

Inside Silo 18, Bernard comes face to face with The Algorithm and Camille Sims (Alexandria Riley), apparently hoping to negotiate a deal to crack down a growing unrest.

His efforts fail, but it soon becomes apparent that Bernard only wanted to provoke The Algorithm in an attempt to test its responses, leading him towards a startling theory: the mysterious intelligence controlling so much of life inside the silos may actually have a human voice behind it.

Knowing the operation needs a distraction, Bernard volunteers to go outside and clean, one of Silo’s most important rituals in which almost everyone ultimately succumbs to the toxic environment outside.

Camille and Robert Sims (Common), meanwhile, finally confront the division between them. Despite finding themselves on opposing sides, both insist their decisions are motivated by a desire to protect their son. Robert refuses to allow his son’s memories to be erased, while Camille believes forgetting may be essential if he is to survive inside the silo.

But Bernard’s sacrifice has served another purpose.

As Silo 18 watches him take his final steps outside, enormous explosions suddenly reverberate through the bunker. Camille realises Juliette’s allies have used the distraction exactly as intended, continuing their mission against The Safeguard while everyone’s attention was fixed on Bernard.

Then episode nine jumps back to the Before Times, where we find out that the silo project has progressed dramatically.

Daniel and Helen are taken on a tour of the underground complex, despite neither having agreed to become part of the population that would retreat into it should catastrophe strike.

The visit provides some of the clearest details yet about how the silos were engineered to withstand the end of the world. They are told the structures could survive a 30-tonne nuclear explosion detonated as close as 3km away, while enormous 25-tonne doors are designed to prevent particles as small as 50 nanometres from entering.

The population is intended to represent far more than the US, with two people from every country in the world invited to join the project.

There is also a cameo from Peter Gabriel, who performs a stripped-down rendition of Here Comes the Flood – a particularly fitting choice given the singer has previously said the song originated from an apocalyptic dream.

Daniel and Helen are eventually separated. Victor Crnkovich (Matt Craven) takes Daniel to Silo 1 after telling him that Senator Rosalind Thurman (Laura Innes) wants to speak with him, while Helen continues touring Silo 18.

Once inside Silo 1, Daniel tries to find his sister Charlotte (Jessica Brown Findlay), but cannot locate her. Increasingly uneasy, he calls Helen. Separated in different silos, the pair acknowledge just how strange the entire project has begun to feel.

Then their conversation is interrupted by something terrifying.

Silo season three, episode nine ending explained

A massive nuclear explosion erupts above ground.

The detonation sends those inside the complex scrambling into emergency mode, with Daniel rushed into the safety of Silo 1 while Helen’s fate outside Silo 18 remains unknown.

It is a horrific ending, not simply because of the scale of the explosion but because of what viewers learnt only one episode earlier.

Per Stensen (Colin Hanks) had explained that the silos were being constructed in preparation for an existential threat involving nanotechnology, even explicitly distinguishing it from nuclear war. Yet episode nine ends with exactly the kind of catastrophe he had seemingly ruled out.

That raises a crucial question heading into the finale: who launched the weapon, and why?

Silo (season three, episode nine)

Starring: Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Robbins, Ashley Zukerman, Jessica Henwick

Director: Amber Templemore

Rating: 4.5/5

There is also the question of whether the detonation marks the beginning of the catastrophe that ultimately forces humanity underground, or is merely another step towards it. Given what season three has already revealed about nano weapons, is the nuclear blast the event that transforms the surface into the wasteland Juliette knows centuries later?

What it does appear to do is leave Daniel and Helen trapped on opposite sides of a system neither wanted to join. With their fates uncertain, Juliette’s plan under way and the true purpose of Silo 1 still shrouded in mystery, the stage is set for what promises to be an explosive season finale.

Silo (season three, episode nine)

Starring: Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Robbins, Ashley Zukerman, Jessica Henwick

Director: Amber Templemore

Rating: 4.5/5

Warning: this article contains spoilers With only one episode remaining, the penultimate chapter of Silo season three is…

[29
351,98771,156,111,139,69,1177,427,417,437
post-582760","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-tv","tag-apple","tag-arts-culture-team","tag-entertainment","tag-new-zealand","tag-newzealand","tag-nz","tag-standard","tag-story","tag-television","tag-tv
["GET
