Across the world, one in 20 of us will receive a diagnosis at some stage in their lifetime. The good news? New research, published in the British Medical Journal, suggests there is one easy step that cuts mortality rate risks dramatically.

The study tracked nearly half a million women who received their first invitations to the Swedish Mammography Screening Programme between 1991 and 2020. Almost a third, it found, did not attend that initial screening. While the 25-year breast cancer diagnosis rate was similar between groups (those who attended their first screening and those who didn’t), the latter group were more likely to be diagnosed with advanced stage breast cancer.

In fact, over the course of 25 years, the group who didn’t attend their first screening were 40% more likely to die of the disease. An editorial linked to the study noted that ‘ensuring that women are informed, supported and empowered to participate in their first screening should be a shared goal across the healthcare system’.

What to read next

Mammograms are X-ray examinations of the breast used to detect breast cancer and other diseases, and this is not the first research to highlight their importance. Still, ‘the new Swedish research really is a powerful reminder of just how life saving that first mammogram can be,’ says Dr Vikram Murthy, GP and co-founder of the Harley St clinic Murthy Health.

Why is that first appointment so crucial?

‘It provides a baseline image for the future and, just as importantly, gets women into the routine of regular screening,’ says Dr Murthy. Indeed, the study found that not attending your first screening was linked to non-attendance at future screenings. Going to your first, it suggests, gets you into the habit of taking your breast health seriously.

As its accompanying editorial pointed out, ‘patients should discuss their individual risk factors, including family history and genetic predisposition, with their healthcare providers…. This study highlights that the decision to attend that first appointment is far more than a short term health check — it is a long-term investment in breast health and survival.’

So when should you be screened?

‘The NHS invites women for breast screening from age 50,’ says Dr Murthy. ‘That’s because that’s when the risk of breast cancer rises and mammograms are most effective. It’s the age group where the benefit is greatest.’ Around 70% of women take up the invitation for a mammogram, according to the latest figures.

According to the BMJ’s editorial, common barriers that stop women from attending their first screening, include ‘anxiety about the procedure, mistrust of medical systems, cost, cultural beliefs, and logistical problems such as transportation or time off work.’

Yet, ‘a mammogram takes just a few minutes and results arrive within about two weeks,’ says Dr Murthy. ‘Screening isn’t something to dread, it’s something to feel proud of. By taking that step, you’re doing something powerful for yourself, your health and your future.’

Other small steps to fight breast cancer

‘Be breast aware and know what’s normal for you,’ says Dr Murthy. ‘Keep active, maintain a healthy weight and cut back on alcohol. A balanced diet, not smoking, and 30 minutes of exercise a day all add up. These are small, empowering habits that really do reduce risk.’

Related StoryRelated Story

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the UK with an estimated 80% of which…

[10
2519,48575,2117,134,2116,111,139,69,48574
post-58339","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-health","tag-content-type-feature","tag-contentid-134814bf-2053-4ab8-b68c-d47dc78074d0","tag-displaytype-standard-article","tag-health","tag-locale-gb","tag-new-zealand","tag-newzealand","tag-nz","tag-shorttitle-this-single-easy-step-cuts-breast-cancer-death-risk
["GET
