Just a few weeks ago, I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/the-prototype\/2026\/07\/10\/this-startup-aims-to-catapult-satellites-into-space\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/the-prototype\/2026\/07\/10\/this-startup-aims-to-catapult-satellites-into-space\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/the-prototype\/2026\/07\/10\/this-startup-aims-to-catapult-satellites-into-space\/\" aria-label=\"wrote about\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">wrote about<\/a> Auriga Space, which is building electromagnetic launchers to replace the first stage of rockets. <\/p>\n<p>Once satellites are in space, there\u2019s a number of companies looking for ways to reduce the amount of fuel needed. One of those is Zenno Astronautics, which is building solar-powered superconducting magnets that can tap Earth\u2019s own magnetic fields to re-orient spacecraft, ensuring that they are pointed where they need to be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn order for us to prosper and to be sustainable in space beyond Earth, we have to learn how to live off the resources already available in space,\u201d CEO and co-founder Max Arshavsky told me. <\/p>\n<p>To that end, the company has built what it calls a Supertorquer. From the outside, it looks just like a metal box that can be plugged into an existing satellite. Using superconductors, the Supertorquer creates a magnetic field that can be adjusted in strength and direction relative to Earth\u2019s natural magnetic field. This in turn changes the spacecraft\u2019s orientation while in orbit\u2013no fuel needed. <\/p>\n<p>While magnetic orientation isn\u2019t new, Zenno\u2019s technology enables it to happen at higher orbits where Earth\u2019s magnetic field is weaker. And the Supertorquer is a solid-state technology, meaning there\u2019s no moving parts that will wear out over time, extending the lifetime of satellites. <\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, the company announced that the Supertorquer has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zennoastronautics.com\/news\/almighty-magnet-flight-ready\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.zennoastronautics.com\/news\/almighty-magnet-flight-ready\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.zennoastronautics.com\/news\/almighty-magnet-flight-ready\" aria-label=\"been installed\">been installed<\/a> on Portal Space Systems\u2019 Starburst-1, which is currently scheduled to launch in October. That mission will give Zenno the chance to test another potential benefit of its Supertorquer: using magnets to shield sensitive systems from radiation. Zenno has included a charged-particle counter that will let the company test this potential in real time. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have essentially unlocked a new paradigm for space, and that paradigm is an electromagnetic platform,\u201d Arshavsky said. <\/p>\n<p>The fusion power race is accelerating<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Pacific Fusion<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacificfusion.com\/updates\/pacific-fusion-breaks-ground-on-first-of-a-kind-fusion-facility-in-new-mexico\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.pacificfusion.com\/updates\/pacific-fusion-breaks-ground-on-first-of-a-kind-fusion-facility-in-new-mexico\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.pacificfusion.com\/updates\/pacific-fusion-breaks-ground-on-first-of-a-kind-fusion-facility-in-new-mexico\" aria-label=\"broke ground\"> broke ground<\/a> on its billion-dollar bet: an R&amp;D campus in Albuquerque, New Mexico aimed at building a fusion reactor that can generate more energy than is put into it\u2013on a commercial scale. Using an approach first developed at nearby Sandia National Laboratory, the company is aiming to hit that net positive milestone by 2030. <\/p>\n<p>And Pacific Fusion isn\u2019t the only company to announce a big milestone in the past few weeks. The race to be the first company to reach grid-scale fusion power is, ahem, heating up. (Get it? Because fusion reactors get really hot\u2026 Oh, never mind.) <\/p>\n<p>First off, there\u2019s Commonwealth Fusion Systems, an MIT spinout backed by the likes of Bill Gates, which at the tail end of July announced it had<a href=\"https:\/\/cfs.energy\/news-and-media\/commonwealth-fusion-systems-raises-another-1-billion-bringing-total-capital-raised-to-4-billion\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/cfs.energy\/news-and-media\/commonwealth-fusion-systems-raises-another-1-billion-bringing-total-capital-raised-to-4-billion\/\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/cfs.energy\/news-and-media\/commonwealth-fusion-systems-raises-another-1-billion-bringing-total-capital-raised-to-4-billion\/\" aria-label=\"raised another billion dollars\"> raised another billion dollars<\/a> in investment, bringing its total funding to $4 billion. That capital will be used to accelerate the commercialization of its fusion technology. But it\u2019s hardly alone in attracting the attention of investors: Japan-based Kyoto Fusioneering<a href=\"https:\/\/kyotofusioneering.com\/en\/news\/2026\/08\/24\/4350\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/kyotofusioneering.com\/en\/news\/2026\/08\/24\/4350\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/kyotofusioneering.com\/en\/news\/2026\/08\/24\/4350\" aria-label=\"recently raised\"> recently raised<\/a> more than $160 million in new investment, and Wisconsin-based Shine Technologies is<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/pro\/climate-deals\/2026\/08\/19\/shine-technologies-ipo-goldman-sachs-jp-morgan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/pro\/climate-deals\/2026\/08\/19\/shine-technologies-ipo-goldman-sachs-jp-morgan\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.axios.com\/pro\/climate-deals\/2026\/08\/19\/shine-technologies-ipo-goldman-sachs-jp-morgan\" aria-label=\"reportedly exploring\"> reportedly exploring<\/a> an IPO. <\/p>\n<p>While we\u2019re still a few years away from commercial scale fusion power (or possibly decades\u2013it\u2019s hard to say right now!), we\u2019re inching ever closer to the dream of nearly unlimited clean energy that the technology represents. Which just goes to show what can happen when you throw thousands of scientists and billions of dollars at a problem. <\/p>\n<p>The Hot Take: AI For AI\u2019s Sake Is Overhyped<\/p>\n<p>Each week, I ask investors for their take on tech trends within their industries. This week, I talked to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.overwater.vc\/team\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.overwater.vc\/team\/\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.overwater.vc\/team\/\" aria-label=\"Kristina Simmons\">Kristina Simmons<\/a>, founder and managing partner of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.overwater.vc\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.overwater.vc\/\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.overwater.vc\/\" aria-label=\"Overwater Ventures\">Overwater Ventures<\/a>, which invests in early-stage startups focused on human health and sustainability. <\/p>\n<p>Kristina Simmons<\/p>\n<p>Overwater VenturesWhat tech is being overhyped right now?<\/p>\n<p>AI is incredibly powerful, but AI for AI\u2019s sake is overhyped. What matters is whether technology is solving a real problem. The most interesting companies start with a meaningful problem and use the best technologies available to solve it.<\/p>\n<p>What should more people be talking about today?<\/p>\n<p>The intersection of AI with other breakthrough technologies. There are some amazing companies being built with AI, and we\u2019re especially interested in problems where AI works alongside technologies like biotech, robotics, sensors, and advanced hardware. These businesses can be harder to build, but that complexity can create deeper technical differentiation and stronger long-term defensibility. We think the opportunity is then to commercialize these businesses \u2014 bringing them from R&amp;D projects into iconic, scalable businesses that have the right application for people.<\/p>\n<p>What are we all going to be talking about in five years?<\/p>\n<p>Health will be completely revolutionized in five years. A company like Adaptyx [an Overwater portfolio company &#8211; AK] is a good example: imagine knowing what is happening in your body in real time. If you can continuously monitor biomarkers and combine that data with AI, you could identify disease, inflammation, or illness far earlier than we can today. We think that creates an entirely new paradigm for healthcare, moving from a system that primarily reacts to illness toward one that continuously understands and supports our health. It will be enabled by a combination of technologies, including AI, biology, sensors, robotics, and others, and it could fundamentally change how we think about health and wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p>On My Radar<\/p>\n<p>AI dichotomy: It was interesting to read Bill Gates\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gatesnotes.com\/work\/make-ai-work-for-everyone\/reader\/a-turbulent-ai-era-and-critical-choices-to-make\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.gatesnotes.com\/work\/make-ai-work-for-everyone\/reader\/a-turbulent-ai-era-and-critical-choices-to-make\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.gatesnotes.com\/work\/make-ai-work-for-everyone\/reader\/a-turbulent-ai-era-and-critical-choices-to-make\" aria-label=\"thoughts\">thoughts<\/a> on the challenges AI will hold for the future, especially in the resulting unemployment, the very same week in which Reuters published a deeply-reported feature by Katie Paul on how Meta\u2019s plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/investigations\/mark-zuckerberg-had-bold-plan-replace-meta-staff-with-ai-heres-how-it-imploded-2026-08-26\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/investigations\/mark-zuckerberg-had-bold-plan-replace-meta-staff-with-ai-heres-how-it-imploded-2026-08-26\/\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/investigations\/mark-zuckerberg-had-bold-plan-replace-meta-staff-with-ai-heres-how-it-imploded-2026-08-26\/\" aria-label=\"drastically cut staff\">drastically cut staff<\/a> in favor of AI imploded. Here\u2019s a company with thousands of technical experts, particularly in AI, whose plans failed not only because of internal employee pushback, but also because the \u201ctechnology at the heart of the strategy was failing to deliver hoped-for productivity gains.\u201d Despite the market improvements in models over the past couple of years, translating those improvements into business advantages is still the major hurdle. <\/p>\n<p>Anthropic vs The Pentagon, week 26: Yesterday, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/siladityaray\/2026\/08\/28\/federal-judge-blocks-pentagons-illegal-designation-of-anthropic-as-a-supply-chain-risk\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/siladityaray\/2026\/08\/28\/federal-judge-blocks-pentagons-illegal-designation-of-anthropic-as-a-supply-chain-risk\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/siladityaray\/2026\/08\/28\/federal-judge-blocks-pentagons-illegal-designation-of-anthropic-as-a-supply-chain-risk\/\" aria-label=\"federal court ruled\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">federal court ruled<\/a> that the Department of Defense illegally designated AI giant Anthropic a supply chain risk, calling the move \u201cunlawful retaliation in violation of the First Amendment.\u201d While that\u2019s a major win for Anthropic, the Pentagon can appeal this ruling and there\u2019s another suit pending against other aspects of the Defense Department\u2019s decision, so it\u2019s not over yet.<\/p>\n<p>SpaceX stuff: SpaceX <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jamiecartereurope\/2026\/08\/28\/where-and-when-to-watch-nasas-roman-space-telescope-launch-this-weekend\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jamiecartereurope\/2026\/08\/28\/where-and-when-to-watch-nasas-roman-space-telescope-launch-this-weekend\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jamiecartereurope\/2026\/08\/28\/where-and-when-to-watch-nasas-roman-space-telescope-launch-this-weekend\/\" aria-label=\"will launch\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">will launch<\/a> NASA\u2019s Roman Space Telescope this weekend, which astronomers hope will shed light on dark matter and dark energy. I find it to be an interesting evolution for Rodrigo\u2013the tracks are still rooted in her comfort zone of \u201990s alt-rock but she\u2019s definitely experimenting a lot more, and it works.
