The programme would include a wide variety of trades, he said, from hairdressing to electrical trades and plumbing, and it did not have an age limit.<\/p>\n
He said while young people would benefit, it would also be for older people who hadn\u2019t had their chance.<\/p>\n
Jackson said Labour had run the programme in Government, but it had been cut back by the current coalition.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe don\u2019t understand why you would shut something down that has been incredibly supportive \u2013 so we\u2019re reintroducing it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cNational has tried to cut its way to growth. Jobs and opportunities have been lost. Labour will grow the economy from the grassroots up, by backing people with the skills and opportunities to get ahead.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is about more than getting someone into a job. It\u2019s about helping M\u0101ori gain new skills, earn more, and build a secure future for themselves and their wh\u0101nau.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jackson said the programme was designed and delivered by M\u0101ori, for M\u0101ori.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe know what works… so it\u2019s not new at all \u2013 so it\u2019s just about knowing what succeeds in terms of our community.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt gives people practical skills alongside the mentoring and practical support they need to complete their training, get into work and stay in work.\u201d<\/p>\n
Labour leader Chris Hipkins said the programme had proven to be a success \u2013 of those who completed the previous programme, 81% went into employment and 76% achieved a training outcome.<\/p>\n
He said too many M\u0101ori were missing out on the security, better pay and opportunities that come with skilled work.<\/p>\n
\u201cBacking M\u0101ori trades training will complement Labour\u2019s plan to extend Apprenticeship Boost and grow the skilled workforce New Zealand needs,\u201d Hipkins said.<\/p>\n
