Auckland and Canterbury have seized most of the growth in university enrolments this year, while trades training numbers continue to slide.<\/p>\n
A Tertiary Education Commission report to Tertiary Education Minister Penny Simmonds said in April this year 354,695 people were enrolled in tertiary education and training, 1 percent fewer than the same time last year.<\/p>\n
A 5 percent drop in the number of people enrolled in vocational education and training caused the fall, while the number in higher education increased 4 percent.<\/p>\n
The individual enrolments were equivalent to 203,918 full-time students, 2 percent more than last year.<\/p>\n
The report said the number of full-time equivalent students increased at universities, but some gained more than others.<\/p>\n
“Based on the number of EFTS delivered, the largest increases in higher education were at the University of Auckland (8 percent, 2165 EFTS) and the University of Canterbury (8 percent, 1254 EFTS),” the report said.<\/p>\n
“These two universities accounted for nearly half of the total growth in higher education delivery. With a minimal decline of six EFTS, Lincoln University was the only university to see a decrease in delivery.”<\/p>\n
The decline in vocational education and training was concentrated in work-based apprenticeships and training enrolments, which dropped 10 percent compared to April last year.<\/p>\n
“Most subject areas saw a decline in work-based EFTS between April 2025 and April 2026, with Architecture and Building (-17 percent, -706 EFTS) and Engineering and Related Technologies (-9 percent, -413 EFTS) seeing the greatest decreases,” the report said.<\/p>\n
“These subject areas accounted for 63 percent of all work-based vocational education provision April 2026, contributing to a notable impact on work-based provision.”<\/p>\n
The report said the number of work-based learners had dropped for four consecutive years and was 28 percent lower than in April 2021 on an equivalent full-time student basis.<\/p>\n
