Google has confirmed it will display both Lake Ontario and Lake America to countries outside the US and Canada in its Maps.

The change follows an executive order signed by Donald Trump, renaming the lake amid a trade war with Canada.

Trump signed the order in the Oval Office, directing the Interior Department to change the lake’s name in the US’ Geographic Names Information System. A large map of the Great Lakes was displayed during the signing, with Lake Ontario relabelled in red as “Lake America”.

Trump signed the order in the Oval Office with a large sign in the background. Now and Always”.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Niagara West Member of Provincial Parliament Sam Oosterhoff unveil a sign for Lake Ontario at the Fifty Point Conservation Area in Grimsby, Ontario. (Source: Associated Press)

The dispute comes as relations between the US and Canada have weakened. Trump imposed a 50% tax on US$20 billion worth of Canadian goods after trade talks between the countries broke down, then Canada responded with retaliatory tariffs on American goods.

Lake Ontario, the smallest of North America’s Great Lakes, sits on the border between the US and Canada.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney highlighted the Lake’s indigenous roots predating the signing of both the Canadian Confederation and the US Declaration of Indepencence. The word “Ontari’io” is an indigenous Wendat term meaning “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big”, he wrote on social media.

!["Trump]("https://www.newsbeep.com/nz/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/trump-signed-the-order-in-the-oval-office-with-a-large-sign-J3BH6UJU6BC3FCIJBSMUOKPSDA.jpg")
