August 31, giving the area a 92.05% enrolment rate, with 4956 still to enrol.

In Wairarapa, 61,281 of 66,252 were enrolled as of August 31, giving the area a 92.5% enrolment rate, with 4971 still to enrol.

As of August 31, 45,275 were enrolled to vote on the Māori roll in the Ikaroa-Rāwhiti electorate, compared with 44,478 on July 31.

An Electoral Commission spokeswoman said the organisation couldn’t provide enrolment percentage rates for Māori electorates.

As of August 28, 3825 were on the dormant roll across the three general electorates in Hawke’s Bay, with 1272 in Napier, 1133 in Tukituki and 1420 in Wairarapa.

If the Electoral Commission cannot reach a voter, they are put on the dormant roll, meaning they are still eligible to vote but will not appear on the printed roll at voting places and will have to cast a special vote.

If a dormant roll voter’s new address is in a different electorate to their old address, only their party vote counts.

Being on the dormant roll doesn’t affect whether you’re on the Māori or general roll, but if a person is on the dormant roll for three years, they are removed from the election roll.

To come off the dormant roll or register to vote, you need to update your address at vote.nz before midnight on October 25.

Electoral Commission deputy chief executive Anusha Guler said because of a change to electoral laws last year, the rules were different from the last election, when voters could enrol or update details during the voting period.

She said EasyVote cards would be sent by post and email to people who enrolled or updated their details by October 4.

<img alt="Enrolment packs returned to the New Zealand Electoral Commission." class="article-media__image responsively-lazy" partnerships at the commission Shane Whitfield said 3.6 million enrolment packs had been sent in August and if people didn’t receive one, it meant they were not enrolled or needed to update your address.

“We’re getting a lot of packs returned to us because people have moved,” he said.

<p class="PLRONTue"
