The runtime for the eagerly anticipated adaptation of Sense and Sensibility has been revealed. Adapted from Jane Austen’s classic 1811 novel of the same name, Sense and Sensibility follows the Dashwood sisters as they try to secure financial security through marriage after their father’s death.

Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as Elinor, the eldest of the Dashwood sisters, while Esmé Creed-Miles will play Marianne Dashwood, and Caitríona Balfe stars as their mother Mrs Dashwood.

Ahead of the film’s release on 25 September, it has been confirmed that the runtime for Sense and Sensibility is 132 minutes, according to the IFCO website.

It clocks in at slightly shorter than the 1995 version of the film, starring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet, which was 136 minutes long.

The news comes as Normal People star Daisy opened up about the pressures of bringing the classic novel to life.

Speaking on the Dish from Waitrose podcast with Nick Grimshaw and Angela Harnett OBE, she said: “Being British, obviously Jane Austen’s part of… the fabric of your life. And my mum is a massive reader, and she was like, these are necessary reading.

“From a young age, I kind of read them all. And then I’d always loved period films. I’ve always liked the original Sense; the Ang Lee one is one of my favourites of all time. Both Pride and Prejudices I can’t get enough.

“So, when I heard they were going to tackle this film again, and it hasn’t been made into a film for, gosh, well, since ’95. So, a long time. It felt really exciting to be like, oh, what is this sort of generation’s version of Sense? So yeah, but she’s like Jane Austen. She’s like a big part of my life.”

She said that starring in an Austen film feels like “a rite of passage”, adding: “I think it’s sort of you feel the pressure because, you know, there’s people have a sort of love of and a kind of relationship already with the character.

“But then at the same time, I’m always most inspired by other performances. And so, it’s really fun.

“I was thinking about how Jeff Buckley’s version of ‘Hallelujah’ is just as beautiful and incredible as Leonard Cohen’s. And I love that with great work… you can breathe new life into it and find new things, but both can exist together, and so I was kind of just excited to see what came to me.”

“Obviously, our screenplay was so beautiful,” she added. “Diana [Reid], our screenwriter, did such an amazing job. And so, I kind of felt really clear about what I wanted to do with it. But I watched every version of Sense.

“I kind of absorbed it all and then kind of sort of let it bake in me- and see what came from it. But yeah, yeah, it is definitely always a bit of pressure where you’re like, oh, I hope they like it.”

Sense and Sensibility is released in UK cinemas on 25 September.
