For India, whose sporting system is vast and increasingly ambitious, the Agreement provides another international connection through which the game can expand its technical base, participation and competitive opportunities.

Softball New Zealand Chief Executive Casey Eden said that the differences between the two sporting environments were themselves a source of value.

“India and New Zealand operate in very different sporting environments, and that creates a real opportunity for both organisations to learn from each other,” he said.

Mr Eden said that New Zealand has a proud international Softball history and considerable expertise across the game, while India represents an exciting growth opportunity for Softball.

“We want this to be a practical partnership that creates genuine opportunities for players, coaches, officials and administrators in both countries,” he said.

Two-way knowledge flow

The emphasis on reciprocity is a highlight of the MoU.

International sporting partnerships can easily become one-sided exercises in which an established nation simply exports expertise.

The New Zealand–India Agreement recognises that each system can contribute to the other.

New Zealand’s strength lies in an unusually deep Softball tradition for a country of its population.

Its national teams have competed at the highest international level for generations.

The Black Sox became one of the dominant forces in Men’s Softball, winning multiple world titles, while the Women’s Programme also carried New Zealand into World Championship and Olympic competition.

Softball New Zealand recorded its first Men’s World Championship Medal in 1966 and a succession of major international achievements thereafter.

India’s development followed a different path.

The Softball Association of India was founded at Jodhpur in Rajasthan in 1961, affiliated with the International Softball Federation in 1965, gained recognition from the Indian Olympic Association in 1967 and from the Government of India in 1973.

India later competed in Asian championships and bilateral series, building an institutional foundation for the sport.

That contrast creates fertile ground for cooperation.

New Zealand can contribute high-performance systems, coaching experience, competition management and technical knowledge. India offers scale, a vast youth population and the possibility of taking Softball into communities where the game has substantial room to grow.

The MOU gives both organisations a structure within which these complementary strengths can be converted into programmes rather than remaining aspirations.

Tour exchanges and new pathways

Among the initiatives discussed were team tours and competitions, coaching exchanges, development programmes, training for umpires and scorers, grassroots participation projects and the sharing of high-performance knowledge.

According to Mr Changlani, such activity could influence every level of the game and that India is enthusiastic about building a sound Softball relationship.

“It was exciting to see first-hand the passion and ambition that exists for Softball in India. There is an appetite to grow the game and to build stronger international connections. This Agreement gives us a platform to turn that enthusiasm into practical opportunities, and I’m looking forward to seeing the relationship between our two countries develop,” he said.

Mr Changlani’s comments captured an important feature of the Agreement: the partnership begins with a framework rather than a rigid list of predetermined projects, giving both bodies room to test ideas, establish priorities and build initiatives around areas of genuine demand.

Building the Game beyond the elite

The most significant effect may eventually be felt well below international level. High-performance cooperation attracts attention, but sustainable growth depends upon clubs, schools, coaches, volunteers, local competitions and accessible facilities.

Softball has long benefited in New Zealand from a strong community culture and generations of families connected with the game. Its international record has given the sport prestige, but its resilience has also rested upon local associations and volunteers who sustain participation.

India presents a different but potentially transformative proposition. Its enormous population, expanding sporting infrastructure and appetite for diverse competitive codes give Softball a large potential audience. Yet growth requires trained coaches, organised leagues, officials, pathways and regular competition. The MOU offers a way of connecting those needs with New Zealand expertise.

Mr Eden said that flexibility had been deliberately built into the arrangement.

“This is about opening a door and creating a framework that allows good ideas to develop. We do not need to have every initiative mapped out from day one. What matters is that both organisations have a shared ambition to grow Softball and a willingness to work together to create meaningful opportunities,” he said.

Softball New Zealand and the Softball Association of India will now continue discussions on the first initiatives to be advanced under the Agreement, turning a diplomatic signature into programmes capable of widening participation and strengthening international performance.

A century carried through sport

The timing gives the MOU significance beyond Softball. New Zealand and India are marking 100 years of sporting connections in 2026, officially tracing the relationship to the Indian Army Hockey team’s tour of New Zealand in 1926.

That pioneering visit included the legendary Dhyan Chand and created a sporting bond that later deepened through hockey and cricket.

The Centenary is being celebrated through the “100 Years of Unity through Sport” programme, with sporting, community, cultural and business events across Auckland, Christchurch, Hamilton, Tauranga and Wellington, and the main festival scheduled from November 9 to 22. Cricket, football and lawn bowls contests between the two countries have been confirmed.

Against that larger canvas, Softball’s new Agreement widens the relationship.

A century after hockey first connected the two countries, sport continues to create fresh pathways for competition, expertise, friendship and diplomacy.

Venkat RamanAuckland, September 4, 2026 A partnership with practical purpose A new chapter in the sporting relationship between…

[2
111,43,139,69
post-590165","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-new-zealand","tag-new-zealand","tag-news","tag-newzealand","tag-nz
["GET
