Friday ahead of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix was far from trouble-free for Red Bull. There had been hope beforehand that Monza\u2019s layout would suit the team better than Zandvoort, but after Friday practice both Red Bulls were behind a Racing Bulls<\/a> (Arvid Lindblad<\/a>) and a Haas (Oliver Bearman<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Max\u00a0Verstappen<\/a> gave up his seat to Ayumu Iwasa during first practice, but once he got behind the wheel of the RB22 in the second session, the list of complaints was long. The four-time world champion struggled, among other things, with the brakes, a lack of rear downforce and a car that was bouncing heavily after set-up changes.<\/p>\n

Technical director Pierre\u00a0Wache\u00a0admits Red Bull has plenty of work to do if it is to turn the race weekend at the Temple of Speed around.<\/p>\n

“I think that clearly we have a balance issue on the car, that is the main thing,”\u00a0Wache\u00a0said when asked by Motorsport.com about Verstappen\u2019s radio complaints.<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s a little bit like\u00a0Zandvoort, to be honest, and we try to understand what the issue is. We try to fix it in a different way by set-up and car components.”<\/p>\n

The latter could suggest that the balance issues in\u00a0Monza are at least partly related to the upgrades listed in the FIA document \u2013 however small the changes to the bib and front wing may be \u2013 but according to Wache, the issue is more fundamental than that.<\/p>\n

“No, I mean that we will evaluate some components and afterwards we have some choices to make between different components [that we have] since a few races. I think we have to make some choices on that.”<\/p>\n

Verstappen complained, amongst other things, about a lack of grip at the rear of the RB22<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0Wache, it has not helped in that respect that Verstappen missed this weekend\u2019s first practice session, meaning Red Bull has slightly less data and feedback from him than usual.<\/p>\n

“The balance issue is the main thing we\u2019re working on,” he said. “It doesn’t help when Max is not driving during FP1 and jumps in the car for FP2. We have less time to react, but now we have to react for FP3.”<\/p>\n

Another issue emerged for Red Bull in\u00a0Monza practice<\/p>\n

That applies above all to the car balance, although there is also room for improvement in terms of energy management.\u00a0Verstappen already said during media day that Red Bull is certainly not the benchmark in that area \u2013 managing the limited amount of energy available at energy-starved circuits.<\/p>\n

Iwasa says Red Bull also encountered some teething problems in that area on Friday:
“Actually we found something that we should not find with our preparation in the lap before the push lap. But that is good, it is a good learning for the rest of the weekend as a team.<\/p>\n

“It was more related to the energy stuff. I think everyone is trying to find a better direction, I think it’s part of the game at this track. But it was good because if we didn’t see it in FP1, then we might have seen it later on.”<\/p>\n

The 24-year-old Japanese driver also immediately felt the same balance issues as\u00a0Verstappen.<\/p>\n

“Yeah, I was saying the same stuff after FP1. Basically the car feels okay on low speed, but on high speed it was quite tricky to drive, like a kind of disconnected car balance,” he said.<\/p>\n

“Honestly, in FP1, I didn’t have many laps, so I didn’t reach the limit of the car, but still, I was feeling similar limitations as him.”<\/p>\n

Iwasa was allowed to replace Verstappen during the first practice session and reported the same problems<\/p>\n

Red Bull has built a strong track record in recent years of turning difficult race weekends around, but\u00a0Wache\u00a0says that does not give him too much confidence for this weekend.<\/p>\n

“I’m never confident, otherwise you will never achieve anything. But it is what we are trying to do and all the team are working hard to achieve it,” he added.<\/p>\n

The energy management aspect is not an immediate concern for\u00a0Wache, but there is plenty of work to be done on the balance tonight, both in Monza and back at the factory in Milton Keynes.<\/p>\n

“It should not be [a concern, the energy management problem]. I think it’s why the free practice is there, to try and highlight the issue and then to fix it after that,” he said.
“I think it’s a normal weekend on that aspect, but for Max and for me the main concern is the balance.”<\/p>\n
