Dave Matthews Band<\/a> kicked off their annual Labor Day run at George, WA\u2019s The Gorge. Infinity Song and Stephen Wilson, Jr. opened the night and the evening\u2019s headliners began their set with one of their earliest jam vehicles, \u201cSeek Up.\u201d The group then surprised fans by debuting \u201cGrux,\u201d the instrumental invocation to their 2009\u2019s LP, Big Whiskey & the GrooGrux King that served as one of founding saxophonist LeRoi Moore\u2019s final recordings and an enduring tribute to the late musician, who passed away in 2008. Continuing the surprises, DMB then proceeded to run through the rest of Big Whiskey & the GrooGrux King in its entirety\u2014\u201cShake Me Like a Monkey,\u201d \u201cFunny the Way It Is,\u201d \u201cLying in the Hands of God,\u201d \u201cWhy I Am,\u201d \u201cDive In,\u201d \u201cSpaceman,\u201d \u201cSquirm,\u201d \u201cAlligator Pie,\u201d \u201cSeven,\u201d \u201cTime Bomb,\u201d \u201cBaby Blue\u201d and \u201cYou & Me\u201d\u2014for the first time. After performing each of those numbers in their proper running order, the ensemble capped off the sequence with \u201cCorn Bread,\u201d which is included on the European version of Big Whiskey & the GrooGrux King and then closed their set with the classics \u201cCrush,\u201d \u201c#41\u201d and \u201cThe Best of What\u2019s Around.\u201d For their encore, Matthews delivered a solo version of \u201cSome Devil,\u201d before bringing the rest of the band back for a show-closing \u201cRecently.\u201d<\/p>\nObservant fans following along with Dave Mattews Band\u2019s setlists this summer may have called their decision to play Big Whiskey & the GrooGrux King in its entirety. This summer\u2019s run has been highlighted by several notable song bust outs, including a few from the LP, and last summer DMB performed 1998\u2019s Before These Crowded Streets in full at the Gorge, later officially releasing the recording. However, DMB\u2019s live take on Big Whiskey & the GrooGrux King still included several twists. During \u201cLying in the Hands of God,\u201d they wove in elements of their own \u201cAmerican Baby Intro\u201d and Master P\u2019s \u201cBourbons & Lacs\u201d and Wilson returned to the stage to sing the second and third verses of \u201cTime Bomb.\u201d Matthews also offered \u201cBaby Blue\u201d as a duet with Tim Reynolds, instead of as a solo number as he has recently.<\/p>\n
