An hour\u2019s flight (or a\u202fsix-hour\u202fdrive) southeast from Auckland takes\u202fwine lovers\u202fstraight into the heart of\u202fNorth Island\u2019s wine\u202findustry\u202f\u2013 Hawke\u2019s Bay, the\u202fcountry\u2019s second-largest wine region and home to heavyweight winery Hawke\u2019s\u202fBay <\/a>, a household name for Sauvignon Blancs and Chardonnays.\u00a0<\/p>\n In nearby Ahuriri, a suburb of Napier, you\u2019ll find The Urban Winery <\/a>, an excellent place to sample some Chardonnay, the region\u2019s leading white wine. Owner Tony Bish has made this a true shrine to Chardonnay, with a range of classic styles. The building also happens to be one of Napier\u2019s most evocative Art Deco buildings, part of a style that redefined the city after a major earthquake in 1933.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n If you\u2019re keen for some exercise to burn off yesterday\u2019s bottle, Hawke\u2019s Bay has hundreds of kilometres of dedicated cycle trails, most of which are off-road but not overly demanding. Bikes and equipment are easy to hire, and you\u2019ll find maps of wineries, caf\u00e9s and restaurants along the way.
