Dragons confirm mass cleanout; Cowboys farewell 11 players

The champion halfback appeared on Nine’s 100% Footy on Monday night and was asked if Jett coming to Penrith next year had an influence on whether he’d re-sign or not.

“It does a bit, probably because of the fact that I never thought it was possible,” Cleary said.

“When it did become a possibility, just to train with him every single day, it means the world to me and it’s something that I’d really like to do.

“I feel like I can offer a lot to him and his development so we’ll see what happens.

“He has the opportunity to come back home and if we’re able to play even one game together, that would be something I’d cherish.”

Cleary then gave a short four-word answer, with a grin on his face, which should excite Penrith fans.

He was asked if he may decide his future before November 1, meaning other clubs, like the PNG Chiefs won’t get the opportunity to offer him a contract.

“There is a chance,” Cleary said before panellist Phil Gould chimed in and quipped: “He’s not going anywhere.”

On Tuesday morning, Penrith players were happy to hear Cleary’s words.

Three-time premiership winner at Penrith Izack Tago told foxsports.com.au that if it took Jett to sign to keep Nathan, it would be more than worth it.

“Anything that will help Nathan stay, I think any Penrith player or fan will be happy to accommodate for in whatever that capacity that may be,” Tago said.

“Obviously we want Nathan at the club, he’s one of the best players so it would be good (to keep him).”

Brian To’o, who has won four titles with Cleary, will be leaving Penrith at the end of next season to take up a tax-free contract with the Chiefs.

The champion winger joked that he wouldn’t be taking Nathan with him, but also said no matter what his decision was, his legacy at Penrith was already set in stone.

“Whether he goes or not, what he’s done for this club is massive,” To’o told foxsports.com.au.

“The legacy that he’s going to leave behind for this club, it’s going to go down in history and he’s definitely the best player I’ve ever seen.

“Just his work ethic on the field and especially off the field, it’s pretty crazy how much someone can put in that amount of effort and work into this organisation and that shows how much he really cares.”

Former Penrith CEO Brian Fletcher predicted to foxsports.com.au last month that Cleary would end his career as a one-club player.

Penrith backrower Isaiah Papali’I said he heard Nathan’s words the night before and they were comforting.

“It was good to hear and you know he’s excited about getting young Jett over next year,” Papali’i said.

“I think that’s awesome news if that’s the case so we’re excited to see what the future holds.”

Cleary will lose millions if he stays at Penrith, with a tax-free contract at the Chiefs, reportedly worth upwards of $1.5 million a season, waiting for him from November 1.

Penrith players have reacted to the news that Jett Cleary’s impending arrival at the club could help keep…

[9
111,139,69,213
post-593722","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-sports","tag-new-zealand","tag-newzealand","tag-nz","tag-sports
["GET
