{"id":593894,"date":"2026-09-08T12:38:12","date_gmt":"2026-09-08T12:38:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/593894\/"},"modified":"2026-09-08T12:38:12","modified_gmt":"2026-09-08T12:38:12","slug":"child-in-suitcase-on-bus-woman-found-not-criminally-responsible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/593894\/","title":{"rendered":"Child in suitcase on bus: Woman found not criminally responsible"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Northland woman charged with ill-treating a two-year-old girl by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1news.co.nz\/2025\/08\/04\/woman-in-court-after-2yo-found-in-suitcase-in-bus-luggage-compartment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">placing her in luggage on an intercity bus<\/a> has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1news.co.nz\/2025\/08\/13\/child-in-suitcase-fitness-to-stand-trial-raised-as-woman-in-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">judged insane<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Auckland District Court judge Paul Murray found the case against the woman was proven, but she was deemed not criminally responsible and was to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1news.co.nz\/2025\/08\/13\/child-in-suitcase-fitness-to-stand-trial-raised-as-woman-in-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">treated as a mental health patient<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The 28-year-old woman, who was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1news.co.nz\/2025\/08\/05\/woman-charged-after-toddler-found-inside-suitcase-denied-bail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">earlier granted permanent name suppression<\/a>, placed the child in a suitcase stowed in the luggage compartment of a bus travelling from Whang\u0101rei to Auckland in August 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The child was discovered by the driver an hour into the trip, during a scheduled stop in Kaiwaka.
