US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent claimed that China \u201ccan never get ahead\u201d of America in artificial intelligence<\/a>, in part due to its \u201ccentral planning\u201d, as three government agencies accused Beijing of maliciously copying technology from its leading firms.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe technical word for stealing and copying American AI models is distillation. So, the Chinese distil our models and they can never get ahead of us,\u201d he said on Tuesday during a discussion at the Southern Methodist University\u2019s Cox School of Business in Dallas.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s kind of like if you\u2019re looking over someone\u2019s shoulder, copying their homework, you can never get a higher grade than they do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Model distillation is a widely used AI training technique in which a smaller model learns from the output of larger ones.<\/p>\n

The remarks came weeks before Bessent is expected to spearhead US bilateral talks on AI governance with his Chinese counterparts ahead of President Xi Jinping\u2019s visit to Washington<\/a> later this month.<\/p>\n
