The optional kick off receive was also trialled.

As soon as the game got under way, the first two kicks out on the full confirmed Gale’s concerns. Cronulla’s Madison Ashby and Dragons’ number seven Kasey Reh, making a mess of their kicks.

“The players I believe were only introduced to the smaller ball earlier this week, so how they can adjust their kicking game is beyond me,” Gale said.

“Their two decent kickers of the footy, it’s a bit unfair the girls haven’t had enough time to adjust to this.”

“I feel like slipping the ball boy $20 and shoving in a standard sized ball,” she joked.

The trial of a smaller ball in Saturday’s contest to avoid the NRLW’s wooden spoon, won by Cronulla 16-8, has been slammed.Source: Getty Images

A kick for touch a little later in the half barely managed to get off the ground, as it skewed off the side of the boot.

As the first half progressed, the errors began to mount. Seven from Cronulla, six from the Dragons.

Albeit this was the two bottom placed teams, the amount of errors in the first 35 minutes were exceptional, in Gale’s opinion.

“We’re this deep into the season, it’s the final round game, the players should be in sync with each other.”

“I’ve got to blame it on the ball because I don’t think I’ve seen, in any game, this many errors (just in the first half),” Gale said, who seemed to express most of what she wanted to say in the first half.

The passing and kicking appeared to improve in the second half, but the errors continued.

A total of 23 errors were counted during the wooden spoon play off, Cronulla making 13, St George Illawarra with 10.

It did appear the smaller ball got more distance when passing and kicking, but control was clearly an issue.

The Sharks recovered from a four-nil half-time deficit to hand the Dragons the wooden spoon. Cronulla interchange player Georgia Hannaway left the field with a leg issue during the encounter with Dragons’ try-scorer Ruby-Jean Kennard-Ellis and sin-binned Tyra Ekepati put on report.

Get all the latest NRL news, highlights and analysis delivered straight to your inbox with Fox Sports Sportmail. Sign up now!!!

Flegler knocked out against Warriors | 00:50

EELS’ STRONG FINISH

Parramatta have finished their NRLW season with consecutive victories, and four wins from their past five, with a 33-28 win over North Queensland leaving open the question of what might have been.

No more evident was that with the try that put Queensland Origin captain Keilee Joseph over for her first ever career double via the nimble footwork and a line-break up the middle of the ground by Parramatta’s best player in 2026, Abbi Church, off the back of some nice work by replacement dummy half Taneka Todhunter.

“Three of the best players we have in the NRLW, and they combine, this is a glimpse of the potential of the Parramatta Eels,” former Jillaroos’ representative Jo Barrett remarked on Fox League. “This is the sort of thing we can expect from this outfit in seasons to come, if they can remain injury free, and spend a little bit more time playing footy together.”

Emerging star Rory Owen then sealed the win with a more than 90 metre effort, catching a misguided chip kick, powerfully shunning two defenders inside her own half and fell over the line for her second try of the day.

It was the centre’s second try of the day, bookending the match for Parramatta with her side’s first and last, making it seven tries in her past four games and 10 tries for the season, the most by an Eel.

Kimberly Hunt (2023) and Martha Mataele (2025-26) are the only two other Eels who have scored in four straight games.

Losing their first six games costing Parramatta dearly by the end, and combined with their injury woes, the Eels finished the season with four wins in eighth. North Queensland slump to ninth after making the top four last season.

The Cowboys lost winger Charlize Lloyd-Phillips early after she crossed in the fourth minute from a shift to the left edge, but was carried off in pain after injuring her left knee in the act of scoring the try, and did not return.

Down 22-6, Parramatta looked long odds to win when Kennedy Cherrington was sin-binned after the Cowboys’ fourth try, however during the 10 minutes the forward was off the field, the Eels scored three tries to tie the scores, had 100% of possession, 100% completion and 241 run metres.

And that 10 minutes proved the difference.

‘ROCKS AND DIAMONDS’ DEBUT FOR TO’O’S NIECE

After 18 tries in nine appearances for the Eels in the NSW Women’s premiership, including two four try hauls, Freedom Crichton Ropati was granted her NRLW debut.

And the niece of Brian To’o, who was in attendance to support his relative, enjoyed the good and the bad rugby has to offer.

Late in the first half, Crichton Ropati looked every bit as good as her uncle, flying high to capture a pin-point Rachael Pearson cross-field kick and score what appeared at first glance to be her first NRLW try, but the precision of the put down failed to meet her uncle’s standards, losing the ball as she fell to the ground.

Crichton Ropati then made an error in the second half which eventually cost the Eels another try with Makenzie Weale crossing the line.

“Little bit of rocks and diamonds (for the debutant),” commentator James Preston remarked on Fox League.

But Barrett was impressed with what she saw and her sentiments were backed up by a pivotal ball-and-all tackle to shut down Cowboys’ Abigail Roache from setting up a bounce back try, late in the game.

“She looks quite at home,” Barrett said. “She seems to be making the right moves at the right time, taking herself into heavy contact without any problems.”

The trial of a smaller ball in Saturday’s contest to avoid the NRLW’s wooden spoon, won by Cronulla…

[9
111,139,69,213
post-598283","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-sports","tag-new-zealand","tag-newzealand","tag-nz","tag-sports
["GET
