A 100-meter rating under ISO 22810:2010 covers named activities; a distinct EN13319 certification covers recreational scuba specifically, to 40 meters; and IP6X, sitting in the same row, is a dust rating that has nothing to do with water at all.

Ultra 4 paired with the Ocean Band. Image: Apple
The 100-meter figure is a named-activity standard

Apple’s ISO 22810:2010 rating for Ultra 4 is stated as covering swimming, snorkeling, scuba and high-speed water sports, at 100 meters. Series 12 and SE 3 carry the same ISO 22810:2010 standard at 50 meters instead. The standard itself is a durability test method; Apple’s own wording ties the number to the listed activities rather than presenting it as a single depth a wearer should aim for.

Don’t miss the best of The Mac Observer

Set us as a preferred source and our Apple reporting ranks higher in your Google Search results and Discover feed — one tap, no account changes.

Series 12 and SE 3 are rated to 50 meters under that same ISO standard, half of Ultra 4’s number, and Apple lists the same named-activity wording for all three watches rather than a different activity list per model. The activities named do not change; only the depth figure attached to them does.

Apple Watch Series 12 carries a different water rating under the same ISO standard. Image: Apple
EN13319 is a different certification entirely

Sitting apart from the ISO figure, Ultra 4’s spec sheet states an EN13319 certification for recreational scuba to 40 meters, with a depth gauge accurate to within 1 meter. This is a dive-equipment standard, separate from the general water-resistance test above it, and Apple does not fold its number into the 100-meter figure. Series 12’s own depth gauge, by contrast, is listed at 6 meters with no EN13319 certification attached.

Apple’s own listing keeps EN13319 as its own line rather than as a footnote to the ISO figure, which is one reason the two numbers, 100 meters and 40 meters, get conflated in casual reading. They describe different tests written by different standards bodies, and Ultra 4 is the only current Apple Watch Apple certifies against the second one at all.

IP6X measures dust, not water

IP6X appears on the same spec-sheet line as the two water figures, which invites the assumption that it adds something to the water story. It does not: the IP scale’s second digit covers water ingress, and Apple’s Ultra 4 listing gives no second digit at all, only the dust rating. Whatever water protection Ultra 4 has comes entirely from the ISO and EN13319 figures above, not from IP6X.

None of this is a statement about what a wearer should or should not do in the water. It is a description of what three specific certifications state on Apple’s own spec sheet, and how those three figures relate to one another rather than to any activity a reader might be planning.

How the three figures line up against Series 12
CertificationUltra 4Series 12ISO 22810:2010 rating100 m50 mEN13319 recreational scuba certificationYes, to 40 mNot statedDepth gauge rangeAccurate to 1 m, to 40 mTo 6 mIP6X dust ratingYesYes
What Apple has not said
Any single combined depth figure that supersedes the three separate certifications. An EN13319 certification for Series 12 or SE 3.What, if anything, changes about these certifications with wear or age.A water rating for SE 3’s depth gauge, if one exists, in the material we checked.

Apple Watch Ultra 4 and Apple Watch Series 12 both reach stores Friday, September 18, each carrying the certifications above exactly as Apple’s tech specs pages currently state them.

Apple’s spec sheet groups Apple Watch Ultra 4’s water resistance under one heading, but it is three separate…

[6
352,221917,220308,111,139,69,145
post-598535","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-technology","tag-apple-watch","tag-apple-watch-series-12","tag-apple-watch-ultra-4","tag-new-zealand","tag-newzealand","tag-nz","tag-technology
["GET
