Investigations into three other suspected fatal dog attacks on cats remain unresolved.

Glossop said there were no new leads in the deaths of two cats killed by roaming dogs, one in Pāpāmoa on July 19 and the other in Mount Maunganui on July 23.

“Those investigations are unable to progress at this stage.”

Five-year-old rescue cat Kauai was attacked and killed by three dogs on July 23 behind her Bayfair Estate home.

Kauai’s owner previously said two dogs had Kauai in their mouths and were pulling at her while a third stood nearby.

The injuries were too severe for the cat to survive.

Glossop said another cat death in Topaz Drive, on July 22, was still under investigation while the council awaited DNA test results.

" Bayfair Estate cat Kauai died on July 23.

The 10-year-old ragdoll Shim was attacked by two dogs and died in the owner’s arms.

Glossop said the council had filed charges against the owner of three dogs that allegedly attacked a small 11-year-old dog in Ōtūmoetai on March 5.

The small dog’s owner earlier said his wife was walking their dog on a lead near the intersection of Sherwood St and Little John Drive when three large dogs escaped from a car and attacked.

The injured dog had two surgeries costing $9200.

Glossop said the three dogs remained impounded pending the prosecution outcome.

The dogs’ owner is due to appear in Tauranga District Court next month to face three charges of owning a dog that attacked another dog, he said.

" Topaz Drive cat Shim, 10, died on July 22.

“We would like to acknowledge and thank those who assisted the victim at the scene, as well as members of the public and the police who provided information that assisted the investigation.”

Glossop said community assistance was critical to helping animal services investigate roaming dog incidents.

“We encourage residents to report roaming dogs directly to the council as soon as possible, rather than just posting comments on community social media pages.

“Photographs, video footage, descriptions of the dogs, and information about where they may be coming from can all assist our officers.”

He said early reporting of roaming dogs and concerning behaviour could help officers identify the dogs and their owners, gather evidence and support interventions before other incidents occurred.
