Held at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, the Emmy Awards celebrate the best in TV over the past year.

Major awards cover acting, directing and writing, and crown shows in comedy and drama, with Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star Mariska Hargitay hosting.

Early in the night, all eyes were on the veteran actor Jean Smart, who took home her fifth consecutive Lead Actress in a Comedy Series trophy for her portrayal of an ageing comedian in HBO series Hacks.

Smart had already scooped four awards for the role, and with the show’s five-season run now ended, she claimed her deserved swansong with a fifth Emmy and a standing ovation.

Pluribus star Rhea Seehorn took home the Emmy for Lead Actress in a Drama, and Task actor Tom Pelphrey received Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. He thanked his “very pregnant” fiancée and Big Bang Theory actor Kaley Cuoco, while crediting his sobriety to helping him succeed.

Critically acclaimed HBO medical drama The Pitt had an early win in the drama categories, with ER alumnus Noah Wyle adding to last year’s Emmy and Golden Globe awards with another gong for lead drama actor. He thanked the Los Angeles television community for accepting him while he grew up in the area.

The series is also expected to take the drama series award, as well as supporting cast nods for Katherine LaNasa and Shawn Hatosy.

Late Show host Stephen Colbert received the biggest standing ovation of the night, winning Best Variety Series for the final season of his long-running talk show. The show was cancelled last year, citing declining revenue, and Colbert publicly encouraged people to hire his departing team of writers.
