{"id":601469,"date":"2026-09-15T22:18:10","date_gmt":"2026-09-15T22:18:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/601469\/"},"modified":"2026-09-15T22:18:10","modified_gmt":"2026-09-15T22:18:10","slug":"short-n-sharp-magnitude-4-8-quake-rattles-central-nz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/601469\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Short n sharp&#8217;: Magnitude 4.8 quake rattles central NZ"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A magnitude 4.8 earthquake rattled the lower North Island and the top of the South Island this morning, with thousands reporting the shake within minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Geonet said the quake struck at 10.44am at a depth of 82km around 70km south-west of Waverley.<\/p>\n<p>More than 5000 people reported feeling the quake within five minutes of it taking place.<\/p>\n<p>Shaking was reported as far south as Kaik\u014dura and as far north as New Plymouth.<\/p>\n<p>Nelson Tasman Civil Defence described it as a &#8220;short and sharp jolt&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Remember &#8211; if an earthquake occurs, drop, cover and hold.
